Forums - Sony - Jack Tretton defends Playstation Vita, says sales are "acceptable"

This bolded line is concerning, even with having a company the size of Sony, there should not be such a disconnect amongst the divisions. The company now more than ever, really needs to make each of the divisions work together more effectively as a whole. That seems to be one of its biggest problems.

Anyway it will be interesting to see if Sony will do everything it can to make the Vita a success like they did for the PS3 this generation.

Agree with everything you've said, they really need to get their divisions working together.  I hope they turn Vita around and I have faith that they will, it's too early to call it dead yet (in my opinion).

This is the problem, Sony isn't doing anything to help improve the Vita's sales. No big Japanese game announced, barely any marketing for the console, and lack of any bundles. If Assassins Creed and COD don't sell well then I don't really see any hope left for this console.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

few companies accept when they are loosing or they make a wrong choice

I'll cut the crap and just ask you, how could the sales be any worse?

2.5 million since release is abysmal, it's not bad or poor or awful or laclustre. It's straight up terrible.

We're talking Dreamcast level here.

The Dreamcast launch was considered a success.

You are correct.  I remember reading that, at the time, it held the record for the most money spent on entertainment in a single day, ever.

Yup.  In America, the Dreamcast did almost $98m in its first 24 hrs - well over 3x as much as the previous record holder, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

It was a very impressive feat... until the PS2 came along a year later and squashed the record again with $250m.

I hope at least internally thinks otherwise. Otherwise the "acceptable" might repeat itself.

well its more acceptable than the 3ds launch disaster.

"Laughs" Not sure if serious.

fyi, i'm serious.

Ok, Then I assume you're reffering to the price cut and the money Nintendo lost from it. Becuase the Vita had a weaker launch in all regions and is performing worse then the 3DS before the price cut.

yeah wasn't the price cut issued within 2-3 month of release? that was quick drastic change if you ask me. but thanks to their quick actions the price cut was very effective. but is it being sold at a lost? that is what we cant confirm.

It was closer to five months in actually.  As of a couple weeks ago, the 3DS is no longer being sold at a loss.  And deskpro is right, the 3DS' situation was never as disastorous as the Vita's - Nintendo didn't let things get that bad.

And Nintendo dropping the price shouldn't be looked upon as a bad thing.  Nintendo did what it had to do in order to move units.  Iwata admitted things weren't going as planned and the company made decisions to correct things - something Sony should be doing for the Vita.  Instead, we get Trentton in denial, saying >50k sales is acceptable - which is pretty pathetic.

Fixed, for this month.

I'm not sure that's strictly true.  I believe it was a mis-translation where they said they're getting closer to profitability, but still selling at a loss for the time being.

"Nintendo expects to cease selling it below cost by the middle of the fiscal year ending March 13, 2013"

That was April 26th.  If there's any update since then that I've missed, then feel free to let me know.  But the middle of this fiscal year would be September, so if they haven't reached it yet it's not a huge surprise.

Disregard, out of date.

Yep, we have an update about this, they said in the last quarter report that, from July 25 (or 26?) the 3DS was being sold above the manufacturing costs :), I am going out right now, but I am sure you can look it up yourserf, or someone can give you a link :)

I'm pretty sure the 3DS XL is not being sold at loss, don't know about the normal 3DS
