Forums - Sales Discussion - July 2012 NPD Thread (360=203k, PS3+Wii=211k, DS=3DS, PSV=Flatline)

Alright, I'm estimating that the 3DS sold around 135k based on these posts on Gaf.

I'm not sure why people expected big things from the Vita in the West anyway.

Because it supposedly had this great "Western" line-up (Uncharted et al) that Sony fanboys pimped like hell in the face of 3DS owners that didn't have shit at the time.

And it was all graphics this, 3G that, and oh yeah 2 analogs stick by the way yatta yatta yatta.

That's why.

PSP < 30k. In fact, that's way too high! 1,000 PS2 sold in July!

The writing is not yet on the wall. Give Vita at least one more holiday season. If it fails by then to make any reasonable sales levels AND the 3DS booms, then it's over imho.

Very strange happenings indeed.

It's gotta make it  there first.

Why are most of you acting surprised? VGC have Vita at 52k for the month, pretty much spot on if <50k means 40-50k.

Sales in the US are just horrible to look at in general though. Hopefully it will improve come the holidays.

Because most people here don't wanna face reality.

You know, it actually scares me to think that there is a chance that the Vita might sell even less than this next month. Especially since Madden 13 (12.5) will be coming out at the end of the month. Of course not unless the sales sustain.

Okay, these might be the numbers based on the NPD PR and of course hints given to us before.

360 - 203K
PS3 - 140K
3DS - 131K
WII - 70K
PSV - 48.5K (average of range endpoints)

Petare even said that these numbers are more reasonable. In fact, these more than accurate than the ones posted before.

The problem that comparision is that the DS was a new brand surrounded by considerable confusion, because the GBA was still in its prime when Nintendo suddenly just released the DS and a lot of people early on didn't know if this was some kind of experiment on Nintendo's part (a lot of people felt the DS was a stop gap for the "real" Game Boy Next back in those early days).

So the DS had an extremely slow start. The 3DS shouldn't have that excuse though, it's the successor to the second best selling platform in game history, the formula and brand momenteum should be there for it.

Much like the Playstation 1 to PS2 -- the PS1 had a sloooow start, but it had to build its brand those first couple of years. The PS2 rocketed out of the gate because it didn't have to.

The 3DS already has had a monstrous price cut, it was Mario 3D Land, it has Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus Uprising, it has Resident Evil (x2), MGS, Tales, it has Mario Tennis, Zelda: OoT, available in many different colors, etc. Sales should not be this sluggish. Honestly from a game library POV, the 3DS is considerably stronger IMO than the DS was at this point.

Are you kidding me? The DS sold over 25 million units WW in 2009, "a few years ago." No other console in the history of the industry has sold that well, and you want the DS's successor to be matching that pace in its first full year? Get out of here. Have you ever seen a sales chart, ever? Let me give you a hint, they look like the curve of a bell. They start low, grow to a peak, and then fall back down until the console is discontinued. Every console ever released obeys this curve. They don't sell in a straight line, the same amount every year, like you seem to want the 3DS to.

The PS2 and the GBA had pretty strong first and second years, which the 3DS has basically matched. They are effectively the only consoles ever to manage this, excepting maybe the Wii. The PS3 and 360 didn't get this mystical first year boost you speak of from their established brands. 3DS did start stronger than the DS, which sold a measley 10M in 2005, while 3DS is well on its way to over 15M this year.
