Worked for Sony when Sega released the Dreamcast. The PS2 was shown to be so much better than Sega's next gen console that everybody decided to wait. The consoles that followed were better but not a big enough jump over the PS2 to garner much attention.

Aside from the launch of the Nes (which technically wasn't the first of its gen, anyway), Nintendo NEVER launches their consoles before the competition. I don't know what's going to happen. Either Nintendo is going to pull an Xbox 360 and launch so far ahead of the competition that it carries them through the entire gen or Nintendo is going to pull a Dreamcast where they launch so far ahead of the competition that it doesn't feel like a true next gen console and the competition eat it alive.

I can't trust an article so horribly written.

One thing I would want to see a company try is to cut the time from the announcement of a system to the release ... I'm not suggesting an immediate release after announcement, but 6 to 9 months seems far better than the 12 to 18 months that we typically see.

I could be wrong but I suspect that by compressing the release of information into a shorter time period a company could build greater excitement for the release of their system. After all, if you coordinated the release of information with third party publishers you could ensure that there was big news being released almost every week.

Yes, and you cant really count the Wii-U in the same generation as with the PS4 and Xbox 720. 

Its rather in line with Xbox 360 and PS2, even some distance away from PS3. So see the Wii-u as following the rule you mentioned to never release before the competition.

I played the Wii-U and i know from what I was seeing, its not looking next gen-ish, which was explained to me as this are early alpha demos....haha yeah really..in summer 2012, only few months away from the release! Thats what they said.
