I quite enjoyed Herdy Gerdy, something different. The last few levels were quite a challenge. That game could really piss me off, yet I had to finish it.

I don't know about unheard of but the RPG series Shadow Hearts was pretty good, tried to mix up the combat by using timed sequences like Legend of Dragoon. (I liked Shadow Hearts' Wheel of Fate better then Dragoon's box target also.)
