Forums - Gaming - Why does GTA 4 get so much hate?

It was the first GTA game that I didn't finish. I tried about 3 times to complete the story but could just never bring myself to do it. It wasn't 'bad' but it didn't hold my interest like the other GTA games

I may pick it up again at a low price and have another go.

I loved GTA 4.

GTA 4 = the highest rated game this generation....and it's for a good reason.

If all you were looking for is a police chase simulator then its fantastic, people complain alot about how there was much less to do than the previous ones, and they are right. Doing vigilante missions was harder and I really missed being a cab driver, sure i could pull out my copy of Crazy Taxi(its around here somewhere) but why remove it? But there was some things that did improve, the cars do handle better, and shooting from them is MUCH better. Bikes suck, which they fixed later. the cop chases were better, no more looking for tokens which i always hated, what they have now makes more sense.

THe story I cant defend, it sucked, hard. It started out about an immigrant then he actually came to the US to find a traitor, which the writers seem to have forgot for most of the game because it became about some mob thing, hours pass and RS is like "crap we almost forgot about the traitor plot, lets introduce this gay guy so we can remind our selves) that gets wrapped up, they forget about it again, then it is resolved in one of the most anticlimatic scenes ive seen in any media. THe only cool part was toward the end when you had a choice to make and it actually affected the outcome, why the hell wasnt RS doing that the entire game(yes there were two others but they had no bearing on the story really).

The DLC stories were actually better ironically, despite being much shorter, characters were more likable and both of them had more plot focus. Hell they even gave you more stuff to do in those tales, I would go so far to say the DLCs are actually better than the main game

It was supposed to bury the Wii, as i recall, which is cause enough.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Because people have poor taste and can't handle change. Luckily, they now have Saint's Row to keep them quiet or, at least, satisfied.

Unfortunately, Saints Row is becoming a parody of itself. Saints Row the Third added a lot of stuff and took a lot of stuff away at the same time. The story and humor wasn't nearly as good as SR2. If anything, the game was too ridiculous.

I guess the moral of the story is that every series will stumble sometimes.

I played the one hour trial on PS3, and I did not dislike it. Then I saw it during the Steam sale for 5 dollars so I bought it. Haven't played that yet, but I do remember some annoying circumstances and car mishaps.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

In large part, the "hate" for GTA4 stems from its overly positive ratings. That game did not deserve perfect scores across the board and 98% on Metacritic.

So, it's a great game, just a highly overrated game. It was early in the generation, and people expected more from the first entry in the GTA franchise for four years and the first on a new generation of consoles than more of the same with a larger city and pretty graphics.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it.  It was getting reviews as if it was the greatest game of all time and it wasn't.  Far too overhyped.

I, like others in this the thread, believe that San Andreas was the better game.

GTA Vice city= GTA san andreas > GTA 3> RDR> GTA4... no one hates GTA IV, if it didnt have rock star or GTA in the title I am sure people would have loved it, but when you look at what GTA was, and what it is now, you die a little inside..

GTA3 changed gaming, Vice city improved in every way and still has the best story of GTA, San andreas pushed the boundries of the series with larger game world and more options weapons and vehicles. they added an RPG style leveling system that many loved such as muscle building and such.

GTA 4 has one of the worst stories, the world is pretty small. no planes at all. no military base that I know of. your main character is actually annoying. the online which could have been amazing was terrible.
