Didn't Sony lose like 5 billion last quarter, seems weird if they could return to profitability so quickly. I'd be satisfied with a much smaller loss.

A big chunk of that 5.7 billion was from paying off future taxes, but ya that Gaikai purchase isn't going to help anything, if they actually profit (which is doubtful) then Sony should see some nice return throughout the year.

Gaikai cost may not be in last qtr ending June 30th.  They agreed to buy them on 30th June and only announced it to the stockmarket on July 2nd, doubt they had paid anything by then.  They also got $125m back from ending that deal with Sharp.

Yea I don't think that the Gaikai purchase will have a noticeable impact for this quarter's results. And I'm not an accountant or anything, but I thought that the costs of an acquisition were spread over it's lifetime in the profit and loss accounts?

Shareholders want paying.  But it will probably be spread over some time period to ensure transition of the business and that key personnel deliver.

Yea. I think I recall from somewhere that the cash actually leaves (i.e. Sony does actually pay Gaikai shareholders etc quite promptly) but for accounting purposes, on the profit and loss accounts the costs will be spread over a period of time.

Oh well this quarter might not be that bad at all. It'll give us an idea for how the Holiday quarter may look.

I doubt Sony as a whole will return to profitability in this quarter, But I believe SCE may do it.

And will do even better when the new slim model arrives.

Not with the way Vita is performing, it's selling poorly while being sold at a loss.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I dont think the gaikai aquisition will efect the results. Since, if im not wrong, they just raise their assets and their liabilities which theoretically doesn't have any effect on the income.

but i could be wrong.

Also about spreading the cost over a period of time, they have to reevaluate the aquisition every year and if it lost worth they have to write off the difference, which then would effect the income.
This is also why MS had a loss this quater, since one of their aquisitions turned out to be worth less than what they paid for (at least that is what i remember reading somewhere).

I hope I wake up to bad news tomorrow as opposed to the usual fucking horrible news regarding sony's financials.

Yeah, everything points to Vita being sold at a profit or at worst break even, but with a disparency between wifi and 3g version, 3g being profitable since it adds a $1-$3 dollars to the production cost. People have, several times, tried to counter my claim but their data and support falls flat and continues to point towards slight profitabilty, as I like to call it. The only money Sony isn't making from Vita is making their R&D costs back, which they project to be made up in 3 years. Hopefully it doesn't take longer than that. It is good to see Sony release a system that isn't a money sink in order to establish a market...though I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea except for they are trying to get their financials in order and can't be taking massive losses just to create an install base.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

This one should be interesting.
