Didn't Sony lose like 5 billion last quarter, seems weird if they could return to profitability so quickly. I'd be satisfied with a much smaller loss.

A big chunk of that 5.7 billion was from paying off future taxes, but ya that Gaikai purchase isn't going to help anything, if they actually profit (which is doubtful) then Sony should see some nice return throughout the year.
|
Gaikai cost may not be in last qtr ending June 30th. They agreed to buy them on 30th June and only announced it to the stockmarket on July 2nd, doubt they had paid anything by then. They also got $125m back from ending that deal with Sharp.

Yea I don't think that the Gaikai purchase will have a noticeable impact for this quarter's results. And I'm not an accountant or anything, but I thought that the costs of an acquisition were spread over it's lifetime in the profit and loss accounts?

Shareholders want paying. But it will probably be spread over some time period to ensure transition of the business and that key personnel deliver.

Yea. I think I recall from somewhere that the cash actually leaves (i.e. Sony does actually pay Gaikai shareholders etc quite promptly) but for accounting purposes, on the profit and loss accounts the costs will be spread over a period of time.
