ive tend to start with water, dont know why
if not, then fire
i think ive never started with plant/grass or whatever

It dosen't matter anyways since your main rival in the game will always chose he's pokemon with elements that gives him the advantage over your starter pokemon.

I've always gone for the fire types, because when I play single player, I just want a fast, hard-hitting Pokémon that can blaze through all the trainer/wild Pokémon encounters. That changed when I got Black though because Serperior was the fastest of the three. That, and Smuglea-, er I mean Snivy was the coolest Pokémon Ash owned in the anime.

Fire is the logical choice. There are fewer fire pokemon to be caught. Also you can always take a Gyarados as your choice of water pokemon.

I always hated Gary because he took away my chance of having an Eevee so early. >_>

You've never played Pokemon before?

Water Types are always the cutest (besides Totodile >_>) so I usually choose them.

Fire (and Rock/Ground) is my most hated type.
Grass is my second choice if the Water one isn't cute/cool looking.

I always either pick fire or water, usually fire. Grass sucks.

I usually choose fire, sometimes water, and rarely grass. When I start a new game, I always choose fire. Then when I replay them later on, I'll usually choose water once or twice. I'll only choose grass if I really like the pokemon (Bulbasaur and Chikorita).

Fire wins cause they seem to be more rare than the other types (not sure how true that is), and I always like having a fire type on my team.

my first playthrough i usually pick fire, although for white i picked grass. I find that in the long run grass is not very helpful, and water types are so easy to come by.
