We can play that game all day... For example, remember six years ago when the PS3 was unanimously declared the market leader before it was even released? Remember after a tragic first year it was still supposed to hit ludicrous sales while Wii would have *negative* sales?
This gen has been crazy. People got carried away with Wii's great success, that is true. But the Wii exceeded expectations. The PS3 didn't live up to expectations.

$99 < $150. It's really that simple. While the PS3 will remain more expensive than the 360, the Wii will be cheaper. Those wanting a "HD system" will be as willing to buy a 360 as a PS3 due to price, at least, but those just wanting a cheap system will go for the Wii more strongly. Also, I should emphasise that a $99 Wii would sell strong to the end of the year. I made no predictions about what happens once the Wii U gets released - indeed, I'd suggest that a $99 Wii would sell strongly up until the end of the year (those buying the Wii U at launch will mostly already own a Wii), and then weaken. I can't see the Wii getting past 110 million without further price drops, because come 2013, it's not going to be selling very strongly at all, even at $99. You're right, the Wii has been affordable for years... those who haven't bought it yet, though, are probably the ones that thought that $250 was much too expensive, and that $150 after six years of waiting is still too expensive. $99 is getting into the reasonable range for such people. The issue for the PS3, however, isn't affordability, it's choice. No doubt you're questioning me saying that the 360 will be cheaper. I'm not referring to the $99 "deal" that they're offering. I'm referring to the fact that MS isn't going to allow Sony to have the cheaper console. MS can afford to lose money on their consoles and not even bat an eye, while Sony are in a tough financial position. If Sony cuts the PS3 price, expect a price cut for the Xbox 360 within a month. |
Nope, it really is not. The Wii's price is not an obsticle to entry and the system is closer to market saturation. The gimmick that once drew in large numbers of casual gamers has been replaced by the Kinect. The release schedule is barren and Nintendo does not support legacy hardware. A $99 Wii would be nowhere as near as popular as a $150 PS3.

The bolded part is what tells me to stop arguing with you. There's a saying about arguing with fools that comes to mind.
But just to clarify, in case you're capable of understanding it - the words "gimmick" and "casual" are the big red flags that tell me that your entire argument is based on fanboyism. It's only further emphasised by your final sentence.

Yes, the PC / 360 owner is a PS3 fanboy. You know the people quickest to label others as fanboys are fanboys themselves. This is why I can't stand discussing anything on video game forums, juvinille nonsense like this. Go ahead, look for a straw man to escape the discussion instead of articulating any valid points. It's painfully, painfully obvious that a $99 Wii would be outsold by a $150 PS3. Anybody can see it. Keep living in your fantasy world were the Wii has plenty of life left in it and actually has a chance of seeing 110 million or more sales. It's obvious that bias stains every opinion that you have. Seeing that this is the case, why am I wasting my time with you?
Edit: Consider this "discussion" over.

Please show me where I used "PS3" when calling you a fanboy.

That's it, keep the straw man alive instead of addressing the valid points I made. Do me a favor and don't change your avatar so i can easily identify and avoid you from now on.

my point exactly. alot has been said throughout this generation and look how unpredictable it has been. so is it really that hard to see ps3 finishing above the wii when all is said and done? considering the wii has a successor releasing this fall, where as we dont know when the next playstation is coming leaves room for a few more years of strong sales for playstation 3. its extremely far fetched i know, but not IMPOSSIBLE.

I think you're trying to make the exception the rule. Just because things didn't go as planned this gen doesn't mean PS3 will sell ahead of the Wii just because we never expected it. I agree that it's not impossible, but it's so improbable that I feel confident in saying that it won't happen.

like i said, its extremely far fetched. we'll get a better idea after the holidays. i have a feeling the wii can still do damage during the holidays. its cheap with a decent library. parents will flock.
