Forums - Sony - Yoshida on lack of “mega-blockbuster” Sony titles this year, family-friendly strategy

Gaming Everything

Sony has a couple of significant PlayStation 3 games releasing later this year. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is due out in mid-September, followed by PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale one month later.

But some would say that Sony is missing out on a hardcore, “mega-blockbuster” title for the rest of 2012.

This is something that Game Informer quizzed Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida on in its latest issue.

When asked about the company’s lack of “mega-blockbusters” for the rest of the year, Yoshida pointed to the fact that some highly-anticipated projects such as The Last of Us and God of War: Ascension require appropriate development time. He also mentioned how Sony intends “to go big on family-friendly titles” for the holiday and its overall lineup will be boosted by third-party releases.

Yoshida stated:

“We’d love to have multi-million sellers for the holiday. But each title needs time to develop, especially new IP like The Last of Us. God of War has always come out in March, so that’s a natural time to aim at. Our strategy for Christmas is to go big on family-friendly titles. This is a neglected genre for the PlayStation 3, but as it matures, I think it’s really important to have these games on the platform. I think we have a great lineup this holiday to complement third parties’ big core games.”

PS3 going casual?!?!

*Dontkillmeforobviousjoke,mmmk?*

Family friendly, yea good job copying the Wii. But honestly do they have many blockbusters? Not really. But at least they admit defeat and went the Nintendo route.

PS2 was very family-friendly.

@Play4fun And then Sony abandoned that strategy and said they don't want soccer moms, and now they're basically begging for them. I guess the PS3 failing changed their minds.

He's only saying that because he has to.

Sony1: f**k we have no blockbusters!
Sony2: damn your right! But we have two G rated games coming
Sony1: yeahyeah, we'll say we're looking after the casual's

Sony fans:  "360 sucks, no hardcore games cause M$ is all about family friendly casual Kinect now!"

Sony Worldwide Studios president: "Our strategy for Christmas is to go big on family-friendly titles. This is a neglected genre for the PlayStation 3, but as it matures, I think it’s really important to have these games on the platform."

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Year of the cas... you know what? Don't even give a fuck. This year's actually looking pretty good for me.

So far for me it's:
PS All-Stars (PS3/V)
Sly 4 (Vita)
LBP (Vita)
Tekken Tag 2

4 ≈ One

That's alright. They need to focus on the Vita anyway, and fortunately both of those are cross-platform games.

I'm not worried, I'll be getting PlayStation All-Stars and LittleBigPlanet Karting.
