Forums - Sony - SCEE shutting down servers for 4 older PSP/PS3 games

This is entirely off topic so I'm sorry but I just wanted to get this off of my chest:

I bought WWE 12 for the Xbox 360 the day it came out last year. I had to have my DLC of THE ROCK (My favorite wrestler of the attitude era). I also paid an additional $20 for some sort of season pass of additional DLC. They had the stuff you pay money for on an entirely different server than the online component. With the online, you can play different types of matches and download additional wrestlers that other users have made, and download user created storylines, moves, etc. Anyway, the online component is a pretty important part of the game.

This part NEVER worked. I love wrestling but I tossed the game on the shelf. Whenever I tried to do anything, the game would always say "The servers for WWE 12 are unavailable right now" or something. After a while, I was like "fuck it". The servers only worked like 30% of the time back then. Well, my little nephew is a big wrestling fan and he's been coming over a lot this summer. We tried to play WWE 12 and, not only could we not go online and download stuff--it would log me off of Xbox Live! It's the only game that did this. We played Call of Duty and a couple of other games and they work great but WWE 12 is actually a broken game.

And this is my biggest fear of these online games. WWE 12 isn't even a year old and it's over and done. Hell, it actually never got started. My $60 a year for XBL and an additional $20 I payed for that season pass on top of the $60 I payed for a game I pre-ordered and NEVER got to really enjoy because it's broken and never got fixed. I wish there was some sort of class action law-suit I could file.

You're probably a very busy person, but if you have the time why not e-mail or call THQ and ask to speak with a manager.  Don't let the person that answers your call handle the situation.  They are told to say very little and deflect the problem. Ask for someone in charge.  Never swear at them unless you want to be hung up on.  An e-mail would probably be the best way to get results in my opinion.  Many companies send out gift cards or coupons to placate angry customers.  I'm not trying to give false hope, but I've had good results using this method for legitimate problems like you're having.

I've bought so many quality games over the years for very little money because I waited.  Now, thanks to online modes and trophies it feels like I won't be able to complete this generations play modes.  Motorstorm Pacific Rift is an awesome game, but there is no way to platinum that game now.  The servers for it are already down if you ask me.  I tried over a year ago to get in on the weekend race mode with no luck.  I tried again last weekend same result.

What would be nice is if Sony, MS or any third party that does this sort of thing could patch the game with new trophies/achievements or have the game platinum once the offline mode is done.  They have to realize that not everyone can afford $60 games or want to pay that much to begin with.  People still buy games years after they are released why not make the online trophies/achievements optional if you're not willing to maintain the servers.

Yeah, I agree about the patching part - I think that should happen with any game which had a requirement of online trophies, they should just patch it so you can do the races, but against bots instead.

I honestly think Sony could & should do so much more to boost the population of some of these online games, though.  It's such a shame, because like you said - getting into a Pacific Rift online game right now is already impossible, but it didn't have to be.

Sony could and should, for example, offer games like this for free on PS+.  Now, I think the PS+ selection is great and maybe people would be a bit pissed at getting 4 year old games for their investment, but idk.  If you threw them in with some of the newer releases it wouldn't be bad.

The knock on effect from this, you'd hope at least, is a temporary boost to the online community for these games.  Possibly a permanent boost if some of the PS+ people take a liking to the game.  I mean, it can't hurt Sony to try something like this - they won't be selling many copies of a game like this new any more, if anything it might re-invigorate interest in the series and convince people to go out and buy a new Motorstorm game (Apocalypse or RC).

I also think DLC for older games should be made free after a while.  It's the kind of thing that might make older players go back and give it another try if they see new maps/vehicles/challenges for free.  Meh.

Edit: And the thing is, they've already taken steps towards this model - Starhawk's DLC is going to be 100% free throughout its life, and Uncharted 2's DLC got made free recently.  They're clearly interested in the idea, why not go the whole hog?

Those are excellent ideas.  Your PS+ idea should be put on the Playstation Blog Share.  The DLC for Pacific Rift adds an extra $30 to their bottom line (Trak Paks, 3D rift) so I know why they don't want to do that.  I've already requested on the blog site that they give a discount on older DLC like this.  I got the Sonic allstars racing DLC for less than 3 dollars so it can be done.

One thing to think about is licensing.  That game has a ton of licensed songs on the disc.  One of the reasons you don't see Loaded(PS1) on the store is due to some music in that game.  This could be an issue with Pacific rift.  Maybe they haven't put it on PS+ is because of the artist wanting fees for a PSN version of this game.

Yeah, now I think about it, I guess it should be an either/or kind of thing.  Like, promote the DLC as free but continue to sell the game for download, or give the game for free on PS+ but charge for the DLC (which I suspect quite a few people would buy).

I'd never thought about licencing issues though, that may well be something to do with it.  Still, even now Motorstorm is beyond being saved, there's a few other older SCE games that could do with being saved.  Maybe I will bring it up on the blog share, thanks for the suggestion! :)

For games like WWE where the online mode is notorious for being bad, you should of waited to see how the reviews actually come out, games like WWE is the main reason why I bother looking at reviews because they actually state a online problem or not, if one talks about, they all usually talk about it. Its also one of the reasons why I actually didnt buy a WWE game this year.

They tricked me!  One of our users (SPDK1) actually made a preview of the game saying "It was the game WWE Fans were waiting for" or something like that.  I specifically said in the comments that, if the online was bad, I wasn't going to buy the game.  Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 was broken a lot of the time, too.  It was tolerable, though.  It was never as bad as WWE '12 is.  I was going to pass  on it but the devs said the online was fixed this time.  They said they learned from their mistakes.  I bought the game (for the free day one DLC) and when I did, it was just as broken as ever and then it got worse.

I AM NOT BUYING WWE '13.

This is kind of an offshoot, but this is why I hate trophies/achievements that are in the online mode. If the servers go down or no one plays anymore its impossible to get them.

It was already practically impossible 3 months after launch with pacific rift. There weren't enough people online anymore for matchmaking to work so I continually got put into races with lvl 25 veterans that knew all the tracks and tricks inside out. Since you only level up when you finish in the top and level down when you finish in the bottom it was all pretty frustrating.
That's probably why the online died, I don't think I was the only one that got bored of not being able to finish a race online after finishing the offline mode with all golds.

It's the same with fps games. You have to start when the game comes out or you're faced with a long uphill battle to be able to compete at all.

I think if a game with online trophies has its online component remove then everyone who has played the game prior to that should earn all of those online trophies.

Please Watch/Share this video so it gets shown in Hollywood.

Games should have a minimum support guarantee on the box, either in years or in minimum active players for which they will still operate a server.

Official WC3 and SC1 servers are still up for Blizzard, because Blizzard has an implicit guarantee of eternal support with each game that helps their image immensely (people trust that any new Blizz game bought will also be around for as long as people want to play it)

I think I'll send them a sincere email explaining my point of view.  It may never get read but at least I can get some stress off of my chest.

I've been playing Pacific Rift's online all night actually, and you're right.  It is slightly frustrating, worse I'm sure since the 30 or so people left playing all know the tracks like the back of their hands.  I did gain experience on the whole but it was a very up-and-down struggle.  I know I won't be getting a platinum, that's for sure!
