It was already practically impossible 3 months after launch with pacific rift. There weren't enough people online anymore for matchmaking to work so I continually got put into races with lvl 25 veterans that knew all the tracks and tricks inside out. Since you only level up when you finish in the top and level down when you finish in the bottom it was all pretty frustrating.
That's probably why the online died, I don't think I was the only one that got bored of not being able to finish a race online after finishing the offline mode with all golds.
It's the same with fps games. You have to start when the game comes out or you're faced with a long uphill battle to be able to compete at all.
