Forums - PC - Dear Esther tops 250,000 sales

Thechineseroom’s Dan Pinchbeck has announced on Twitter that unusual atmospheric adventure Dear Esther has passed a 250,000 sales milestone. “We always said we’d celebrate if we shifted 20,000,” the modest indie noted.

Dear Esther launched in mid-February, was profitable in under six hours, and shifted 50,000 copies in its first week. Pinchbeck is now working on Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs for Frictional Games.

Thanks, GameInformer.

I bought it for 2.49 :)

I bought it for 2.49 as well and only because of this girl I liked in primary shcool called Esther haha, My first real crush I guess.

I'll buy it soon :D

I bought it for $2.50.

Probably the only reason I bought it was because of the Steam sale. I had no interest in getting it for $9.99. Even for what it is, $2.50 felt like a bit of a stretch.

So if each copy was only a little more than $2.5 then 250K corresponds to less than 25,000 copies for a full priced console game (which sell for significantly less on average during lifetime than the launch price of $60). That's not much revenue lol.

Kinda like Angry Bird boasts with their 1 billion downloads but revenue is still on par with one Assassin's Creed game.

The point is? Did you not see the part about the game being profitable in 6 hours? That's full-price sales, not near $2.5.

The point? The point was to compare numbers and show that 250K really wasn't as much as it may have sounded at first.

It is a lot though, for such a tiny game with a tiny budget.

Haven't you noticed yet? Slimebeast just likes to hate for the sake of hating. His hate is not constructive hating anymore, he just hates whatever he comes across these days. If he's unfamiliar with something or doesn't care for something, he hates it..... A habitual hater if you will.

Why would anyone compare a game that cost $140k to develop vs a game that cost $20 million + $20 in advertising? Angry Birds made $70m+ in pure profit as of the end of last year with "just" 645m DLs. That is a over 400,000% profit margin for fk sake.

Also Dear Esther is a game which cost less than $100k and turned a profit in 6 hours of going on sale. It's an "art game" with no real gameplay and no payed advertising that is why 250k in sales is impressive. There is no need the compare it to a AAA game.
