Forums - General - So I am writing two books in the past couple of years,but..my bad luck hits hard.

Like the title says i've been writing two books for quite awhile, I always go back and rewrite them over and over because I am never satisfied with the results, but I want to talk about one of them, just to tell you about a really twisted irony, so one of the books is called Elyzium (Elysium) , and its about a bounty hunter by the name of simply C. (headhunters are outlaw, so no full names) , and his ship "The Nephilim", the story doesn't only center on C. though, it follows other outlaws as well, and their relations with each others and backstory, I've been working on this for years, and I always rewrite some of so it wouldn't leave any plotholes or make the characters feel unimportant, you see all well and good right? , well the title of the book Elyzium , is about an independant space station that is home for every "Black" market and Hit contracts , Elysium as in definition is

e·ly·si·um/iˈliZHēəm/

  1. The place at the ends of the earth to which certain favored heroes were conveyed by the gods after death.
  2. A place or state of perfect happiness.

so you see.. i thought that since outlaws are well.. outlaws, homeless, misfits and have been expelled from their homelands..ect, that name would fit perfectly, and unlike Mass Effect for example, the galaxy's ruling government doesn't have much control outside of earth (which is now black rather than blue for reasons explained) and other planets, they only have control so Elyzium is basically an independant entity, a santuary or a man made planet (if you will) with its own rules, and policies, so what seems to be the problem here? well... out of irony and bad luck, I searched for "Elysium" the other day , and found this shit....

Elysium is an upcoming science fiction film written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. The film stars Matt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyWagner Moura and Alice Braga. It is scheduled to be released on March 1, 2013.

Elysium was originally believed to be set on another planet in the far future. However, it has been recently revealed that the film will instead take place on a ravaged Earth and a space station named Elysium, where the movie's title comes from. The film will combine sociopolitical ideas and action.[1]

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy "Coordinators," people who can afford bio-genetic engineering, who live on Elysium, a pristine man-made space. station built by the Armadyne Corporation; and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky ex-con Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

oh my god, all this time i've been working on this, is now turned to nothingness =[ , If I am actually to change THAT aspect of the story, I basically have to start ALL OVER again. godamn you District 9 guy, I liked your movie, now I don't like it at all!

by the way, here is a trailer of that movie, at least his earth isn't black , but "Ravaged"

Also the other book , which is actually even older than this one, is not Scifi, but High fantasy, ALA LoTR and A Song Of Ice And Fire (A Game of Thrones) . it is called Heartland , and I am planning to write a lot of books and mini stories of that one ,the mini stories are kinda like folklore sung by the bards in this universe, (DragonBorn comes anyone? xD ) , these mini books are called The Wandering Bards , and each mini story is written in a way like It was written by  bard or a poet that are characters and part of this universe as they write about their journies across this land, (imagine yourself writing about a fictional writer who is writing his/her books, Writerception? )  they're pretty lighthearted and short compared to the main book series, and they shed light on some of the backstory of this universe and its kingdoms, and clans, these short stories are also less serious, and more fantasy-ish (so the bard can sing them in front of people for entertainment) with that said, I know that genre is beaten to death, so I am not worrying about any cliches and obvious inspirations on this one, but I love writing about it.

Is it not possible just to change some names and a few aspects of the premise? He doesn't seem to really be touching on bounty hunters or anything.

As a fellow writer, I feel for you :(

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Fuckin' Matt Damon.

Hey I wrote this thread last week...

The two plot points are completely different. I think all you'd need to do is change the name of your ship and you'd be just fine.

If that is indeed the case ( I have no reason to doubt you ) that's tough shit and you have my deepest sympathies.

You need a new title for the book and revise the whole space ship come man-made-planet idea. The main outlaw story line and characters should be OK. Good luck.

how annoying, well don't let it put you off as you can learn by finishing your story, being a sci-fi fan i like the sound of this film

you will just have to tweak the names a bit if it is all too similar

                                                                                                                                        Above & Beyond

Just say you had this as a script for years and went To some movie studios with it and now they stole your idea! All the useless, starbucks is my office, writers do this..

the thing is, even if i continued writing while changing the names, the core idea wouldn't make sense, and most people will think its a rip off, and I was very focused on the space station being a "Sanctuary" of outlaws, I even went as far as rewriting C.'s backstory (real name is Carl, and his childhood...etc etc)
