They are very big, that's why I got a 500 GB hard drive.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Might want to argue it isn't a lot, but that doesn't matter. Some does, and depending how much it's compressed, it might greatly effect the quality. |
The problem is a 45GB game like Uncharted 3 doesn't seem to look or sound much better than an ~8 GB game like Gears of War 3.
There are games on the PC that look better than Uncharted 3 and don't even come close to 45GB. So clearly not much is lost in compression.

It is mainly the 7.1 uncompressed sound I would think. That and the cutscenes not being compressed at all. In most PC games you can see the compression of the cutscenes (and I hate it), at least, when they are not directly in-game. |
Well apparently there is some compression. How else could they fit a massive game like Uncharted 3 on a single disc?

The video quality is a given. Shame that shaper video seems to be real advantage PS3 has seen from Bluray.

I expected a silly thread from you asking why every ps3 game (disc) is around 37,5 cm in size.. Hmm you failed me!!
Because audio is uncompressed on PS3, and games like Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, GT5 etc. are huge because they're 3D, if the KZ3 demo is still on the Store, check the size of the 2D version then check the size of the 3D version.
I have the 100GB PS3,so it's no big deal. I had the 60GB one until 6 months ago,but the picture/connection on that one got all screwed up,so I just bought a new PS3,because I was to lazy to do the whole customer service thing. lol
disk versions of the games have the data repeated in different sections multiple times. why downloadable titles are so much larger I don't know. Maybe its the lack of compression? probably. it might just take more programing to get a game to run on PS3 over 360, but I don't see why games are 5GB more other then lack of compression.
everything is uncompressed.
Mass Effect 3 having lots of "compressed like hell" videos and being compressed itself is 14gb. So it is not so hard to believe that an uncompressed game can use 20gb.
UC3 I think is 45gb, because the 3D version of the cutscenes are just vids stored in uncompressed 720p quality in the Bluray. The same goes with KZ3. The PS3 is powerful, but to render that kind of graphics TWICE would make it explode XD.
