europe ps3 phats never had emotion engine and played ps2 games just not as many or as good as emotion engine equipped ps3s

First I've ever heard of that.

OT will probably buy it i like the look much better than the current slim, im gonna miss the slot loading and led lights my 2501 has, but it better at least have wireless N

So how big is that emulation list? And if that's true shouldn't the current PS3 models be allowed the codes to allow for this limited emulation?

The original PS3s had two chips to enable 100% backwards compatability - the EE and GS.

When they launched in Europe, they killed one of the chips (forget which one) and just used an emulator for that chip. I think, using the combination of the chip and the emulator, they were able to get around 80-90% of titles running, though some had issues (I remember Ratchet and Clank games played, but suffered major slow down at times).

Later, they killed the second chip (with the PS3 slim), and didn't bother trying to write an emulator for it. Market research showed that consumers didn't care enough to warrant the costs to create an emulator (due to the massive differences in architecture, the process would have been long and difficult), so they killed emulation entirely.

They've since have had massive success with porting the "best" PS2 games over to PS3 with added features/improved assets... basically, they've become the George Lucas of the gaming world. As such, it seems unlikely that they'll ever fully implement PS3 b/c, as it cuts a significant revenue stream for them.

All PS3s with both chips are still 100% B/C. The PS3s with 1 chip are still 80%ish B/C, but Sony has ceased work on the emulation of the first chip (when they first launched the one-chip + emu combo, the B/C was significantly lower than when they started, and through firmware upgrades (which included newer versions of the emulator), they slowly increased B/C to its level between the Euro launch, and the announcement of the Slim).

You do know there are PS2 games on the PSN store that are exact copies of the original ones and are emulated, right?

Hmm.

It is possible that specific games can be recompiled with little effort to run on the PS3. This is not the same as emulation, and can only be on a case-by-case basis depending on the games that are chosen.

I'm willing to bet dollars for donuts that those games if ripped and burned to disc, could not be run on a modified PS2. Those files will only work on PS3s. If I am right, then they are not running on an emulator.

Your post is accurate in large parts, but this one is not. They excluded all PS2 hardware starting with the 40GB Fat PS3, two years before the first "slim" - the EU 60GB and the MGS4 80GB edition still had the GS.

Ah, my bad.

I was doing this off the top of my head, just assumed that they killed B/C along with alternate OS support.

Damn it, did I miss a picture of a penis on VGC?

Anyway, I think the new PS3 slim looks decent but not great. I am happy it doesn't look great because I can feel satisfied with my old slim that I love.

16GB version, now that is crazy. Some games demand a 8GB install. Are you supposed to only play 1-2 games at a time? That would suck.

It's a win for Sony though if they can price it at $149. That's unbelievably cheap for a PS3 and a Must Have for casuals who don' own a PS3 yet.

we know they're going to announce 3 different models so they're giving people options. the 16GB is like a starter i guess and hopefully you can still upgrade if needed, whilst the 500GB is for the hardcore tech people like us. like you said, if they can get the starting price at only $149, it'll be a huge win.

A $149 16GB PS3 will have explosives sales in BF... make it Sony.

well they never called the revision as ps3 slim officially iirc..so this is their actual slim

not a fan of the top..but the rumors are they even have a 16GB version. Pricing could be very interesting..and the timing of the release (wiiU launch period?)

MUGEN, you should put the OPs info in your post since the OP is banned.

And also @Burning Typhoon. Sorry about the delay..just got home. Updated my post with all the info in the OP :)

Oh, yeah..  Sorry.  No rush, I didn't even see Jay's post.. I was making a suggestion.

But, here's a question...  Do you think this is going to create a PS3 generation gap between easrly adopters, and newer adopters (basically everyone that had a PS2).  Do you think this trend will continue into PS4, where only a third of people will get one until it drops to the 150 dollar price point?  Is it too late for PS3 to do PS2 numbers?

If they make bundles with last of us, or with beyond 2 souls..or something popular.. Oh my.. i think it'll move a lot of hardware

You have to install a lot of game son PS3, which takes up quie a bit of space. And you can say goodbye to digital downloads with 16gb unless yousay hello to an external hard drive.
