Forums - General - DirecTV to lose all Viacom programming tomorrow

http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/10/3148750/directv-losing-viacom-channels-negotiation

And when they do, I'm dropping it.  I can get by on Netflix and the internet.  I catch the odd episode of Tosh.O and South Park but my family really enjoys Nickelodeon, MTV, and everything else.  Oh well.

Would post a more informative OP but I gotta go.  Sorry!

They do not have AMC anymore either. I watch over two dozen different shows on a monthly/regular basis so I have to at least have cable.

Sucks to be a dish network customer with a contract.

If i don't have AMC, what am i watching right now?

OT: the most i'll miss will be Comedy Central. Nickelodeon is neither here nor there, and the rest i've never particularly dealt with.

However, i do think that someone is going to back off. DirecTV is the biggest single TV provider in America (30 million subscribers, which is a tenth of the American population), and Viacom will start taking that hit immediately as their advertisement-base evaporates overnight and ratings immediately plummet, while DirecTV will only take damage if they drag it out long enough to convince users to jump ship

But Viacom seems to get into this with a lot of telecom providers. I remember New Year's Eve at my uncle's place a few years back, where Viacom was threatening Time Warner cable with something or other, and they backed off then as well.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Apparently the root of the dispute here is that Viacom is trying to push an all-or-nothing deal, forcing DirecTV to pay more for the networks with weaker ratings in order to get the bigger boys (Nick, MTV, and Comedy Central) on board. DirecTV is citing falling ratings across the board, while Viacom is trying to get revenue up due to recent stock shortfalls.

MTV

So they like to watch commercials and "reality" TV?  Seriously, you should ban anyone in your family from watching MTV.  Nothing good comes from MTV.  MTV has sucked since the late 90s when they replaced music with shit.

PS.  I get by with Netflix and Hulu Plus (thinking about dropping it but I keep it for Daily Show and Colbert Report along with a few other programs)

I think d21lewis had to leave cause he's getting some tonight... Which makes us proud.. Go get her boy!

We're moving into day two of the blackout. I'm not missing much, aside from daily reruns of 30 Rock and Futurama off of Comedy Central

I'm curious about public perception here, though. Who is winning the PR war? Who are people mad at?

Apparently Viacom has been pulling free (legal) episodes of some of their series from the internet, off of places like Hulu, in what DirecTV is accusing them of attempting to hold consumers hostage over the dispute. Meanwhile, the cable company Cox Communications has come out in support of DirecTV (which is odd, given market competition and all)
