I think by ports most people mean games that could easily be mistaken for their console versions not the usual meaning of exactly the same game on a different system.  A gameplay port if you will.

Its Ridge RAACERRRRR!!!!! Seriously. Are you guys excited yet?! Another thing, why would they port a 3D massively boring RPG (oblivion) to the PSP like a year after everyone already played it?

I take if you don't live in Japan or the US, as a lot of those games are already out. And most of the ports gamers whine about came out in the first year. Yes, we're past that, but that still hurt the PSP's rep. How could the PSP have so many ports, when too many ports were seen as an element of the handheld ghetto?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

It isn't a port. It's a spinoff, focusing on dungeons over an overworld. I thought it would be obvious that if Bathesda claims the Wii can't handle Oblivion* they certainly aren't going to put it on the PSP.

*Although a port using the Morrowind engine could work just fine.

I think we can expect much more non-port games in the future. You just can't port PS3 or X games for PSP. No one is going to buy cheap, crappy ports. Oblivion for PSP is totally different game. Anyway I believe solid portable version of home franchise (like MGS:PO, Tekken DR, FFCC) aren't something what leads PSP nowhere. PSP has a lot of time to develop. BTW this is first Sony's incarnation on the handheld market and it's more successful than original GB - it means something. 2006 was much better than it's predecessor. This year will keep this positive trend too.

Well, this is the problem; what people assume a "port" is.

Rainbox Six Vegas - is due out next month on the PSP and PS3 simultaneously....is this a port?  The 360 and PC versions have been out since last year.  But both the Playstation versions were announced before the 360 version hit the shelves...so this game would be classed as a Universal release in my books (i.e. it's released on multiple platforms, maybe not at the same time, but they are in development together).

Prince of Persia Revelations - well this is a port.  It was developed from the original game Warrior Within and although there is a few changes to the game, it is in fact a port.

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops -  this is a game developed from a series of games, but it is a unique title on the PSP and includes unique gameplay and elements not found in any other version.  This is not a port.

I hope this make it easier to understand what a port is and what games aren't in fact ports.

Have a look through the PSP game library and especially the forthcoming games and you will see that there are very few ports and not that many coming out soon either.

The problem with your counter is you are taking the term "has too many ports" literally. The phrase says that but MEANS "has too many ports, multiplatform games, and rehashes." I repeat that is the subtext of the phrase even if the exact words are more specific (although enhanced remakes are considered their own game).

That may not seem fair, but the PS1 and PS2 had loads of exclusives. The PSP merely has plenty. It's supposed to have loads, like the other ones. It's all about expectations, not reality. The fact is that even one year of lots of ports, rehashes, and multiplatform dumps is not supposed to happen to a Playstation system. Thus it fails by not being a super-duper success, and being a mere success.

There's not just one reason why people think there's not enough good games for PSP. One reason is that if you compare games between DS and PSP, you'll find out that DS has better variation between its games and DS has more games that fit better in the handheld console gaming. PSP have more ports from home consoles than DS, and these games you prefer playing with your PS2. And people see games with certain franchise as same game (well, thinking of most sequels/spinoffs, can't really blame them). PSP have quite a lot games, what fit better playing with home consoles. At the moment only Locoroco and Exit comes to mind, that would be "perfect" games for handhelds, that are on PSP. And DS has a dozen "Locorocos and Exits". I think biggest problem is that PSP has games biased too much on one type of gaming. Just like the 360 has, 100 FPS's and Viva Pinata.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I'm not too interested in the PSP library, if I wanted to play a compelling tale in a rpg I would probably buy it for my 360. The two games I am interested in are that lemmings game and probably grand theft auto. Though if it can show movies I would be pretty intereseted in it.
