Make sure I am reading this correctly. Am I right? I pegged it as a niche title, and it looks like this niche title has gone #2 in sales. Am I missing something?

It's a Pokemon game on the most successful platform of the 7th generation.
It bombed pretty hard by Pokemon standards. Doing less than 150k in opening week.
Think about it this way: it sold to under 0.1% of DS and 3DS owners this week.
Lollipop chainsaw was number one last week. That was a niche title which received a lot of bad reviews. In contrast, conquest is part of one of the biggest gaming francises ever. So, not much of an accomplishemnet in my opinion. No wonder Pokemon games haven't changed significantly since the release of Pokemon Red/Blue. Everything outside the main formula underperforms. Same with Mario, Zelda and Metroid.

You have a point with Zelda, but Mario's second best selling game was a kart racer of all things, and Metroid's most popular installment, Prime, was a major change from its sidescrolling predecessors. And come to think of it, aren't the three best selling Zeldas, the original, Ocarina, and TP, all innoovative for their time in some way or another? Even TP was the first great motion control game.
Have you heard of Pokémon Ranger and Mystery Dungeon, because they are games that are significally different or even moreso than the mainland Pokémon games, especially ranger. Don't make such statements without proof, depending if you don't think they are significally different. I also don't think that 5 million for a spin-off pokémon game is underperforming, as spin-off usually worse than the main entries of a franchise. Also if you add the USA first week plus Japan's first week, you get abit higher than 300k in sales for first week, keep also in mind that Europe has not got this title yet.

When it comes to Mario, I was talking about Mario Galaxy 1+2, two of the best rated games of all time with sales far less impressive than new super mario Bros.
About Metroid, I was talking about the last one in which they tried to make Samus show emotion and suffer from PTSD and while critics liked its new direction, fans hated it.
And lastly, I was talking about the latest Zelda game which featured more precise controls which imporved a lot of gamers' experience. In other words, they took a risk with this (since it requires motion plus), and it didn't pay off.
So, what I'm saying is, I get why nintendo play it safe with their franchises. People vote with their wallets and they seem to dislike major changes.

Like other people have been saying; it's a Pokemon game.
I also saw a few commercials on it so I'm sure word got around.
