Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo says: ‘We Can’t Promise Wii U Won’t Be Excluded From Next-Gen Multi Platform Games’

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told investors that the company can’t promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multi platform software. Iwata believes that Wii U, and the next generation consoles from both Microsoft and Sony, won’t be drastically different with regards to visuals.

“We cannot promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multiplatform software for eternity, but we can at least assure you that the Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms, developers could expect very different graphic capabilities of generating HD-applicable high-resolution graphics.”

“Other companies might launch a next-generation console with more power, but we don’t necessarily think that the difference between the Wii U and such console will be as drastic as what you felt it was between the Wii and the other consoles because there will be fewer and fewer differentiators in graphics.”

This goes without saying, especially when you consider the fact that Nintendo isn't interested in buying up exclusives. Not like they need them. They just need to make sure that the games that are on the system, are completely unique.

As much as I respect this man, love Nintendo, and think the Wii U can do well, it's just PR talk. Even if it's slightly more powerful than the PS3 and 360, the system is within their league on a technical level. If he thinks that the next Microsoft and Sony systems won't be much more powerful than Wii U, then he also believes they won't be that much more powerful than PS3 and 360, which is just silly.

Now, that's a completely separate issue to whether it will have good third party support, which remains to be seen. If it fosters an ecosystem where games that third parties like to make can sell well (which didn't happen with Wii) then the third parties would be foolish not to include it in their plans. Not to mention, all this talk about expensive, scalable engines such as CryEngine3, Frostbite, and Square's Luminous engine mean that giving it something that at least approximates mid-range games on the more-powerful platforms should easily be within reach.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Tag, courtesy of fkusumot: "Why do most of the PS3 fanboys have avatars that looks totally pissed?"
"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I don't like the way its worded, but it kind of makes sense. At least they're aware of the pink elephant in the room.

Still doesn't sound greatly hopefull, but at least a hell of a lot better than the Wii.

As long as the U gets the 3DS treatment (games tailored to it, in volume), then I'll be more than happy. Even if it doesn't get the twin games, as long as the U games are AAA I'll be content. Nintendo can sustain a 100M userbase if Wii and the DS lines are any indicator of interest for Nintendo's non core, more family friendly platforms. I'm starting to understand that core multiplats are not needed anymore, the HD twins are there for those.

As long as Nintendo serves some core 1st party IPs, and 3rd parties follow their lead, I'll be happy.

Funny I say this hey? :) Was about time I realized it I think.

Actually, instead of being upset, I should be happy because this creates a niche that can offer fresh and new game experiences.

This actually makes me happy :D!

Really, they can't promise mass exclusion from current-gen multiplats. Time will tell

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

nothing new here...

if 3rd party support is better than Wii, we have more than enough

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

the key is "he thinks" as in he is making an assumption on how much of a graphical leap MSony will make. but as nintendo's value system is so drastically different from MSony his opinion is about as valid as pachters.
