Forums - Sony - Has the PS3 actually beat the hackers?

by the way I am still waiting for that incredible homebrew community that everybody was claiming to be the purpose of the hacks not piracy

Cannot say it for PS3, but here you have homebrew-soft for Wii (the WiiBrew-site holds also toolkits and guides how to develop homebrew for the Wii):

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_applications

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_games

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_emulators

And for  the DS:

http://www.ndshb.com/index.php/component/jdownloads/viewcategory/4

I think similar stuff exists for other devices.

Not really.
Hackers (the good ones) have already found several ways to hack the new updated OS time and time again, but they're not releasing it because there is no good reason to do so. (no must have features etc.)
Pirated games can be played with an old OS version. Even the most recent ones that would normally need an OS update. There are also several ways to downgrade your PS3 to the point where you can install a custom firmware.

They're just not creating a new custom firmware so that PSN is safe in case of cheaters.

Incorrect, there is no way fw 4.11 is hacked, jailbreakers are stuck at 3.55 since march 2011. Don't think that they don't release it becoz it has no must have features. There were no must have features either between 3.41 and 3.55.

Post 3.55 games can be played on a cfw 3.55, but only with a 60 buck dongle called TrueBlue, and they release their patches months later after the game is released. Why would you downgrade anyway? You will still need to buy a dongle and wait till they patch the game, on top of that you have no online.

I have a 3.55 cfw console, for my emulators. I actually like playing SNES GBA roms in HD textures on my hdtv :)

Wrong I just looked up Uncharted 3 and there was a 100% working release 2 days after launch playable on 3.55 without a dongle.

3.55 was already outdated shortly after Gran Turismo 5 hit store shelves.

Just because there is no other custom firmware doesn't mean that newer versions (4.10) haven't been hacked yet.

FW version 3.55 had its own CFW because Sony didn't patch the previous exploit so there were enough people that used the same exploit to make a newer CFW even though there was no need for it.

There are certain games, like UC3 that can be played without the dongle, but they're in a minority.

But the most important ones (the AAA exclusives) work:

Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, InFamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 came out after 3.55.

And online can be bypassed with either f***PSN or XLink Kai.

Killzone 3, inFamous 2 and LBP2 don't require 3.55. f***psn is a temporary solution, it surfaced again last week after it was gone for more then a year. Ive never heard anyone going through the trouble for xlink kai.

What do the hackers lost? While Sony lost their reputation and millions of income..

Their $$ that they donated to Geohot! haha

Compared to the PS2 it became way harder to hack, besides games are still too big to download for most. Also compared to the X360 or the Wii (easiest console to hack ever) it remains way more of a closed platform, so that's another win for Sony. Still pirated games exist, as they have existed for any platform, and probably will until all developers do what Blizzard did with DIII :/
