Forums - Sony - Vita will die without a price cut in 2012

Like a lot of other people I was expecting a Vita price cut to be announced at E3.  Considering the current situation the handheld finds itself in it just seemed like the smart and obvious thing to do.  Of course they could still surprise us since we're still a few months away from the crucial holiday quarter but considering their statements of late it's looking unlikely that Sony will be throwing out that kind of life preserver.

I'm sure there are people eager to reply about the big games coming out for the system later this year but in my opinion that's the reason I think it will die without a price cut.  There will be an incredible amount riding on the sales of these big games since they will likely decide the future support of the system as a home for good third party support or a bleak wasteland with just the occasional bone thrown to it by Sony.

Without the price cut I think we'll see these games make no real impact at all in North America and quickly fall off the charts in Europe without even opening to numbers comparable to big third party console games.  This will lead to the third parties now supporting the system to end any real development outside of rare cheap ports and those thinking of jumping on board deciding the risk is too great.

As for a pricecut in 2013, it will probably be too late by then and will be akin to closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.  It won't erase what happens this year and it will be even harder or impossible to get skeptical third parties back on board, especially those burned by Vita in 2012.

First I'll respond assuming there is no price cut. It won't "die" but it sure will sell horribly. Right now it's doing about 50k weekly and it would only slightly increase over the summer. The holidays will come not a moment too soon boosting sales to an ok level. As the new year starts again however will be when things get ugly. Hardly anyone who wants a Vita would be "convinced" during that time and sales will go bellow 10k weekly. It will dwindle.

Luckily that won't happen! All signs point to a price cut soon. It is following a very similar path to the 3DS right before the price cut. My money is on Gamescon, maybe TGS, to announce it.

oh boy Legend is back >_>

Sorry but when was the last time anybody announced a pricecut at E3? Its summer right after E3. Sony announces their pricecut around GamesCom and it goes into effect around september, just before the holiday season.

are they going to take a loss on each system sold if they cut the price?

Assuming there's no pricecut, then the Vita may fall as low as 40k per week, which certainly isn't an encouraging position for devs!

But I think the Vita will be just fine. It may have a bit of a, well, rubbish start, but with the games, I think it'll really take off this holiday season.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

DS has a slow debut with not good sale but it's become the best selling handlheld in the world it also sold more then ps2 the best selling home console and that without price cut.
All what sony is need is games the sale of persona is the proof that if they are games psvita can sold good and i think developper know that software is key of success.
Even Xbox360 get support when the sale in Japan is really bad when release that sofware and hardware are not good developpers get tired.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

The problem is not the price.

$250 for a 5' inch OLED display and a chipset that's basically double what's in the current iPhone (8 cores right?) is a pretty sweet deal actually.

It's the same price the PSP launched at and successfully launched at.

The problem is times have changed and people no longer need a dedicated handheld gaming device outside of Japan where handhelds are replacements for home consoles.

And in Japan, Nintendo basically neutered Sony by taking away the Monster Hunter franchise.

The only market left for dedicated handhelds in the West are kids (primarily young boys), and Nintendo is simply better at getting that audience than Sony ever will be because they have Mario and Pokemon among others. And even kids are gravitating more towards iPads/iOS devices.

the DS was selling nearly double than the Vita right now on June 2005, so not on the same level of poorness
also is not above Ps2, but its on the way....

The 3DS has almost no interesting games in the West at the moment but still sell 2x more than the Vita.
