Forums - Sales - Phil Harrison: PS3 price drop is not even on the radar

Phil Harrison isn't the most reliable source. Things like the "rumble is last gen" gaffe, shows that he finds things out shortly before we in the public do. Kaz Hirai or Howard Stringer would most likely know about any sort of PS3 price drop before Phil.

Sales will go up at this price. They just won't go up very far any time soon. Regardless of what games they have coming out, though, a holiday price cut is a must. Microsoft would do well to understand that as well.

I just don't think Sony CARES that they aren't selling well jsut yet, they know it's going to pick up as the year progresses and I just don't think it is that much of an issue for them, the first half of year for gaming sucks because not many great games get released... do you know why that is? Because US the CONSUMERS buy less product during this period, if people bought more games away from the holiday season then this situation wouldn't arise as much.

But, I guess that just means that the Videogame industry really hasn't come that far and that the 'gift giving' nature of the christmas period is really the strongest part of the year and there is no point releasing a game in any of the other times...

Eventually the whole year up until October - December is going to end up very very flat and then massive spikes will occur at Christmas.  It wasn't always this way but if you look at the Month by Month figures for the last few years (US especially) it's becoming flatter each year.

The PS3 may not be showing fantastic sales right now, but it is showing steady sales. Sony would be foolish to lower the price before the big hits are released, the ones that are going to move more PS3s into consumers' hands. Once they've gotten through the 2007 holiday season and their momentum starts to die down (and the cost of manufacturing becomes ever lower), we'll see a price cut.

Also, if you ever ask Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft if there are plans for a price cut -- they are always going to say no. Saying "yes" just cannibalizes their sales; who wants to buy one when you know they are planning to cut the price? The most you will ever get out of a PR rep with their head on straight (which, admittedly, Sony's PR hasn't always had) is "We are always evaluating the market to see which factors will result in higher sales, and price is one of those factors."  Most likely you won't even get that much.

Well like its been said before, price drops are not gonna be announced months in advanced - cause that would kill sales.

So when any company says there is no price drop, never believe it :P

 End of thread right there.

The PS3 has not been showing steady sales, unless you mean steady declines in sales. WW sales had a bump in March because of the Euro launch, but Europe has followed the NA and Japan with week to week sales declines.

The fact is they're still losing too much money per unit sold to drop the price. Perhaps there will be a price drop this year, but I don't know why anyone would expect one this soon. The PS3 has just had a pretty darn good European launch, and given high price and virtually no AAA games it's ability to sell 130k a month in the US isn't bad at all. Their biggest concern right now is Japan. Nintendo is on the verge of completely taking over that market. Sales will pick up for the PS3 as the games come.

I think right now Sony looks at how the 360 is doing and says hey, we'll be able to catch up. The 360 is not doing great, not even in it's best market of the US. It's still getting outsold by the PS2. I feel, as Sony probably does, that the HD gaming war is not really even going to begin this year. The Wii will dominate 2007 both in sales and in the press. It's 2008 and 2009 when the real battle between the PS3 and 360 will come forward.

yeah again what is the point of droping the price? Soon they'll have a number of big titles to help sell the system, if they fail to boost the ps3 forward then a price reduction will be passed until then it's hardly beneficial.

Typical Sony fanboy ranting:  "PS3 price will drop any month now!"

Typical Sony response:  "PS3 price will not be dropping any time soon."

Typical Sony fanboy response:  "Sony is lying!  Price will drop holiday '07 if not sooner!"

Give it a break...I'm sick of all the threads based on the PS3 and a possible price drop.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

If anyone has actually run a business, cutting prices permanently is never something you look forward to. It's easy to say lower your profit margins when your money is not on the line.
