Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo going out of business?- Back to the Future

A video segment circa 1990 about the holiday console wars. That was supposed to be the last big year for Nintendo, because Sega Genesis was going to crush them & Nintendo would never survive. Please note the pre-Michael Pachter "analyst" at 1 minute into the video, pretty much sounds like Pachter today. Funny how long people have been thinking Nintendo was doomed...

Anyone have any thoughts? or historical perspectives from this video?

Yep. Because people constantly underestimate the selling power of Nintendo's IP's, and their systems.

Some things never change.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Stock price reached a 7 year low today and the company is worth 83% less than it was just 4 years ago...

Not saying its doomed... just showing how things can change quickly.

Are you talking about Nintendo?

Nintendo and PC gamer

@Kowenicki. Yes Nintendo stocks did decrease to 7 year lows today but so did Sony's. It was worse with Sony as it hit 30 year lows.... The market is changing and I think it is a good time to invest in Nintendo now. Nintendo is an innovative company (Microsoft copied with SmartGlass, the same with motion control), and has one if not the most strongest IP's out there with Mario, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Star Fox, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and so on. Nintendo is in transition, the Wii is ''dead'' and is outpaced by PS3, and XBOX 360 so of course the stock of Nintendo reflects that (Wii still sold better than the other consoles nevertheless and will remain the best-selling of that generation, a gap of 25 million). In the end, people will line up for the Wii U. I mean c'mon Pikmin 3, Assasin's Creed and New Super Mario Bros Wii U with touch screen controls and all! They are going to do well for sureee!

NTDOY stock price reached a high 4 years ago mainly because of heavy speculation and over-enthusiasm for the Wii. It reached a low today because of heavy speculation and under-enthusiasm for the Wii U. Not saying the stock price has no bearing in reality, but let's be honest, stock prices don't always accurately reflect the situation. Still, Nintendo has a lot to prove, especially after barely revealing anything too exciting at e3....

To be fair, Sega did steal a big portion of the market in the West with the Genesis (Mega Drive), and created a dent in Nintendo's image that has stuck ever since.

In the home console arena, these predictions were not so off, sorry Nintendrones. Nintendo should have listened, had they, they would have been ready.

Not only is Nintendo still in the console & portable business, whereas Sega dropped out a long time ago, Nintendo owned the competition last generation with units sold. DS & Wii were huge successes, whether people can admit it or not. Sony is bleeding money, and Microsoft lost tons of money for the first few years with the 360. As far as i can see, Nintendo is the only one out of the current three that has a sustainable business model. Sega didn't have a sustainable business model and they failed because of that. We'll see if microsoft & sony can last much longer. I'd bet on nintendo in the long run.

Lots of fails here.

1) First of all, Nintendo isn't going out of business, and the video never said so.

2) Sega dropping out has little to do with the topic at hand. There are other reasons about Sega that caused that.

3) Sony picked up where Sega failed to finish the job. Had Nintendo had no portable offering, they were out of the game, sorry.

4) Nintendo's failures in the core marketplace is not justified by its success in the casual marketplace. They are to be winners in both to be true winners in my eyes.

True, true. What do you think about Nintendo's Wii U? Do you think it will be as successful as the Wii? Or will the price be too high at first just like the 3DS and once the price drop hits, it will sell like cotton candy? In my opinion, I think the Wii U will break all kinds of records just like the 3DS did at first but will it remain steady throughout? I really don't know :s I hope yes, but it remains to be seen. My prediction, first 3 month of Wii U sales will stand at 5 million worldwide for hardware.

Crazy when you try to think about it, but how would everything look today if Nintendo didn't have the huge success of their handheld to keep them afloat?
