I actually assumed this was pasted from somewhere else, did you do it yourself? It's well written and I like the template, looks pretty professional.

Sorry if you read it like that, I felt odd in framing that information, but those are the facts in comparing the online counterparts between the platforms. The point in this thread is 1.) to share information that might have been lost in Sony's E3 presentation that poorly explained it, and 2.) to answer the question at the end "is this a sustainable business model and if so what impact could this have throughout the industry?" |
Don't apologise.
Right now on Gamefaqs and here, there are people who STILL don't know how PS+ works and it's been out for over 2 years. Any piece of info is useful

I know, but won't that get redownloaded by ps plus? Or is that the install data? I wish i could choose what i want it to download so it wouldn't download updates for crap like Home. |
Install data takes up more space than patches, delete an install data for a game you no longer play (usually over 1Gb)
Home doesn't get downloaded unless you actually go there.
If you stop using something or use something else in its place, it will stop downloading the item.
e.g I play GT5 last but then deleted the update
PS+ sees I don't have the update for GT5 and tries to update it for me.
delete its last attempt and then use something/play something else
after you've used 3-5 other items, GT5 will no longer be a priority.

Is there a way to get rid of update data? For example, I don't have GTA 4 anymore. I deleted the install, but do I still have the update data on my hard drive? Also, my ps3 is set to turn on at 2 o'clock to 4oclock. I woke up at 5, and it was still on! Is this normal? I thought it ended at 4. I don't want my ps3 to overheat or stay on too long while I am asleep.

You can turn automatic updates off in your system settings = Automatic Update. I guess the issue is you'd have to forgo auto updates for system updates and games you actually play, but you could always just bare through the updates as they come. I think if you have the game deleted from your harddrive it won't auto update so you won't have to worry about deleting update files just to have them reinstall later. So for Home as an example, if you are okay with deleting that program itself you won't have to worry about updates taking up space on your HDD either. Though there are certain times even non-Home goers can utilize Home for things.

GAME>>>Game Data Utility>>look for anything GTA4 related>>>triangle>>>delete
yes, if you are downloading/updating/installing something large, the console will stay on longer than necessary to do as much of it as possible. If you don't want it to remain on for that specific session, switch on the console then switch it off again.

there are about 3 "flavours" 3GB-5GB and 8GB. Depending on how much you intend on using Home, choose the one that best suits you. I went for the 8gb so I could download as much of the spaces as possible. I enjoy home a lot so don't take my word for it as you might not like it.

Can you source me this? I can update my OP to match any new information. It's been hard to find, a mistake in my opinion.
