You can turn automatic updates off in your system settings = Automatic Update. I guess the issue is you'd have to forgo auto updates for system updates and games you actually play, but you could always just bare through the updates as they come. I think if you have the game deleted from your harddrive it won't auto update so you won't have to worry about deleting update files just to have them reinstall later. So for Home as an example, if you are okay with deleting that program itself you won't have to worry about updates taking up space on your HDD either. Though there are certain times even non-Home goers can utilize Home for things.
