I've seen a lot of interesting sales statisitcs in threads that have dissapeared. I think we need a thread to gather that information. The info that you think many people either are misinformed about, or don't know. I'll start with an example.

THIS is Wikipedia's list of the best selling franchises ever. People here seem to thing that it is correct, but it is not.

THIS is the "correct" list. I used Vgchartz, and the data is not 100 % certain. (look a bit down on the 1st post)

Another example, although it is not as good, is the list of best selling games this generation.

For consoles only (excluding pack ins and Wii play), people seem to think that this is the list:

1. Halo 3
2. GeoW
3. SMG
4. tLoZ: TP
5. Forza 2.

The "real" list is: I used Vgchartz here too. Ps2 sales are not included, neither are Wii sports and Wii play, nor handhelds. Increase in sales from february 14th to 29th of April is in ()

As you can see, during the last month and a half, Guitar Hero has had some insane growths. The number is a bit incorrect, as both the Ps3 version and the Wii version have been adjusted up. This makes that part of the statistics incorrect. Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 have also gotten very big increases, a bit of this is due to that the DS version is now included, while it was not before.

Another fun fact: During December and January combined, Wii Fit sold 626K + 401K = 1027K. Total Ps3 software in Japan was 514+ 492= 1006K. That means, Wii Fit alone, outsold the entire software sales of Ps3 in that period!

For February through April, this has not been the situation.

However, Monster Hunter Freedom 2G has done that. Easily. In March and April (so far) total Ps3 software is 615K, while MHF2G has sold 1805K. You may not think that is very surprising, as PSP has a much bigger installbase, but fact is, it's only 4.5 times bigger. This means that the AR of PSP owners buying MHF2G is actually about 60% of the AR of Ps3 owners who buy a game.

Videogaming in America had a HUGE increase from 06-07.

If you look at it, there were sold about 50 % more software in 2007 than in 2006! There were also sold about 40 % more hardware! And no, it is not only because there was a new gen starting, because all the years earlier in USA < 2006.

Wii Sports has a higher attachment rate in Japan, than Halo 3, or any other game, does in USA.
Halo 3: 5.3M out of 11.0M = 48%
Wii Sports: 2.8M out of 5.2M = 54%

 Good post! Don't expect to exchange pleasantries with the Wii fans, however... And remember, the PS2 was not available outside of Japan till 8 or 9 months after, it did devastating numbers in Japan!

Wikipedia is obviously a questionable source for any information, but I am curious as to how you determine that the other list is "correct".

Where is this information coming from? If the answer is VGChartz, then I am afraid to say it is far from being accurate. VGChartz is probably the best available free source of information on current sales, but for older games it is patchy at best.

I made the other list myself, by the numbers from Vgchartz. I also backed up by some medium to low reliable sites, but seriously, who cares about a few millions? :P
