Forums - Gaming - Heads up!: On-Disc DLC is Not the Same as Day-1 DLC

I've seen a lot of DLC discussion the past few weeks, and I keep seeing members comment on on-disc DLC being identical to day-1 DLC. Even Pachter said it in one of his recent talks.

There's just one very distinct difference I'd like people to remember: On-Disc DLC is completed on the printed disc and was ready when the game went into printing. Day-1 DLC (or DLC within the first few weeks) is often created when the development team has finished making the game and has started finding down-time between the debugging, finalizing, printing of discs, and release date.

This is another reason why more games are having Day-1 patches. These developers have more time to work on patches and content that they don't have enough time to finish on the disc but are ready in time for the product's release date. Keep in mind that there are a number of weeks between when a game goes "Gold" and starts getting printed to when the release date happens.

Nope.

A game should not be shipped or 'Gold' until its fully ready. Patches and day 1 DLC is just stupid and a bad practice.

DLC should be purely extra content that is intended to provide longer value to playing the game for incremental costs. Not something they originally wanted in game and to meet a street date pushed off and decided to sell later for more.

Patches shouldn't exist except for bugs simply not realized at all. See Nintendo for how to do this one.

They're both the same to me

While that is an ideal mentality, there is always "more" that can be done with a product. I would rather the game come out than be delayed and delayed as developers think of new content to add. DLC has its place when done properly.

Also, you actually didn't contradict my point, if I am reading your post correctly. You may dislike that sort of DLC, but it does have a distinct difference.

Also, Nintendo has had a few major game-breaking bugs in their recent franchises (Twilight Princess?) so they're not exempt from this. Yes they do a fantastic job of finishing their products before releasing them, but there's always more they could add or tweak along the way after the product is released.

I agree, but publishers have deadlines for developers, so they can't always delay a game to polish it or fix every single bug, which probably gave way to day 1 patches.

if they put the dlc on the disc, i want the dlc for less money because they don't have to have servers for that to send this shit to millions of people^^ it's less expensive for them to put it on the disc. less costs for them should be less costs for me and if it is only a cent lol

The only difference between On-Disc and Day 1 DLC is that you know for a fact that the DLC was ready at release in the On-Disc case. You don't actually know with Day 1... or even Day 300 DLC. It could have been ready at release, held back as a timed release, developed later, etc, but you have no way of ever knowing.

For something like characters and quests and stuff, I think the size of the file usually dictates whether it was already on the disc or not. Costumes and other cosmetic things might be hard to tell, since I can't picture those things being particularly big in file size.
