Thing is Nintendo used to be THE graphic console.

When are you thinking? The NES, soundly beaten on every technological point by competitors like the Master System? The SNES? A lot more RAM than the Genesis, sure, but no advantage in processing power. The N64? They stuck with cartridges leading to limited textures. The GameCube? More powerful than the PS2 and DreamCast, but outclassed by the Xbox. My point is, I don't think Nintendo have ever been thought of as THE graphic console. They've been more technologically comptetitive, sure, but has that ever helped them? Look at the consoles I've named above. We go from the least technologically capable relative to its competition (NES) through to the most technologically capable (GC) and it's a long cycle of diminishing returns. Lower install bases, lower software sales, lower marketshare. Is that really the game we all want Nintendo to play?
NES, GameBoy, Wii, DS. Nintendo's most successful systems. Graphically inferior to all of their rivals. 3DS is nowhere near the graphical level of Vita, and even some smart phones and tablets, but it's still almost eclipsed the GameCube's lifetime sales in little over a year. Nintendo don't need and haven't needed to play the graphics game, and I honestly can't think of a time Nintendo have been thought of as the graphics console.
