I think I see the problem now with the UE4 images, it's that character they created. The normal maps they're using are really bad. He's very angular in nature, probably to hide the low amount of polygons they used to make him with. The texturing on him is borderline low res (decently far away he looks good though, up close on the other hand). Though the environments are good. I am still dissapointed with the lighting and shading though. Looking at the model again light isn't scattering over the model, it's being handled by the normal maps and poorly. Compared to the Samartarian demo, this is really a step back, hell half the stuff they wanted in the Samartian demo isn't in this demo (The fancy boketh(however it's spelled)blur, reflections, etc). I'll go on a whim and say they just rushed this demo, or it was made with the older consoles in mind.

Doesn't look that low polly

I was refering to the character model itself, scenery was very well done.  But That model does have a lot of polygons, from the tesselation, but that's the flaw with tesselation, subdivide a square into 1000 little squares doesn't give you more details.  Like I had said, the demo was most likely rushed, tesselation on a character model isn't useful without the displacement map on it for details, which is what is missing from that character.  You can see it on the close up of his face.

loool, i think most people missed the point from the post and comparison. These next gen pics are probably the least impressive we've seen leading up to a new generation. Of course they're better then the ps3 and current pc games, but what happens when you don't a million lava particles conveniently hovering over your hammer,..... The game won't look too far off what we've come to expect.

I'm excited but in comparison to previous generations, this is more a half step. Like the dreamcast vs gamecube. We're at a point where games are looking like HQ GCI, thats as good as graphics need to be. But without a doubt we will see more impressive things then those UE4 pics, we've haven't even seen it in motion, that could change everything.

If you really think games look like CGI you don't know a lot about graphics, do ya? They are nowhere close to that level.

They obviously are'nt equal to GCI, i meant to say they're approaching CGI. Even then i'm refering to a likeness, just compare the facial models of Elle (last of Us) and the women featured in the diablo 3 trailer. Of course were not close to having a game where every single strang of hair animates individual but such details are reduntant. However its clear there is a massive difference between the quality of particle effects, cloth simulation etc.

Also CGI is a massively general term, I'm talking specifically about its use in games where its normally used to portray things which may be difficult in-engine, whether it be scale, detail on a character or fluid animations of a battle. There are very few things that the ps3 can't faithfully recreate, let alone modern PCs. Of course thats not to say there isn't room for improvement, as proven by the vids posted earlier

The resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing, vsync, smoother framerates all jacked up. BF3 on PS3 doesn't look close to the PC version honestly. I am always disappointed when I play PS3 games now, they look a bit blurry and jaggy after playing so many PC games.

It was you!  You are saying that about PS3 games right, that they look blurry and jagged? (not a mess, admittedly)

I did find the example I meant though, it was this one: (don't know how to quote twice in the same post, sorry)

Exactly, I didn't say they looked like a mess. I said the look "a bit" blurry and jaggy. That's far from a mess. If you can't see the jaggies, I don't know what to tell you. Even Uncharted 3 has them. GoW3 probably has the best anti-aliasing in a console game though. I could almost not see any jaggies!

Yeah I noticed that with God of War 3 as well. That is why I think it's still the best looking console game I've ever seen. To me, jaggies are the biggest detracter from for game graphics.

UE4 ones do look better. But meh I'm more interested in seeing ND's next engine..

well theres your problem, you fail to see the improvements of Unreal Engine4 because you seem to be a fan of naughty dog

which is the reason behind your bias of the engine >_>

Again PS3 exclusives are heavy-scripted and linear graphics. Those aren't that hard to achieve....

? Did you read the part about me saying it does look better? I 100% agree that it looks better. It really isn't a surprise I look forward to ND's next engine tho right? Even if you forget I love their games, their achievements in the graphical department this gen sure warrants that interest. I personally can't wait to see what the next UC is gonna look like next gen

I don't think the bolded and underlined parts need an explanation.

Maybe he is "biased" towards the engine because Naughty Dog have delivered, what most people agree to be, the best looking game on consoles this generation, and he would like to see what they can achieve next generation.
