You pretty much just nailed why it's so hard to get any Superman story right. Hell, they reworked the character in the mid-80s because there were no stories left to write. The current Superman is the "weakened" version of the character. DC has spent 30 years trying to get people reinvested in Superman and it hasn't really worked and Batman is now DCs premiere character because of it.

I loved the movie and I love how the Hulk steals the film did not expect that. I was expecting the Hulk to be the worst thing about the movie (after the last two movies) but it was Captain America who let the side down, it baffles me as to way he's even needed he didn't do anything except be Captain Obvious

Huge comics fan, here. I liked the movie a lot, mostly because I like any story where a bunch of Superheroes with different personalities come together. That's why I used to love team books so much. Just the character dynamics alone would wow me. This movie had that. I liked how it was pretty faithful to the comics when it came to who got along with who and who was respected.

Probably my favorite part was when Cap faced off with Loki early in the movie. I was thinking to myself, "That's just what Captain America would do." Yeah, he always has a plan and a way to win, but whenever a despot is ranting and trying to subjugate people, Cap can't help but walk up to them and punch them in the face!

It was a fun movie with some great moments and a cool culmination of a good experiment but, in the end, it was pretty forgettable. Aside from a lot of great characters in one place, the story was pretty weak. If I watch it again (and I will), I'll likely tear the movie a new ass by asking "Why did he do this? Why didn't he just do that?" As a comic come to life, I gotta say that it almost did everything that I wanted it to--especially the super-hero face offs like Hulk vs. Thor or Iron Man vs. Thor. The story just needed more time in the oven. Just seeing all of the heroes in one place will make it my favorite Marvel movie but X-Men First Class is easily a better package.

Good comic brought to life. Great fun for a summer blockbuster. Kind of weak as a movie. Again, coming from a HUGE comic geek.

I somewhat agree that the story was thin but Whedon was juggling ten characters in the movie and had to give every one their time to shine. I really don't know how he could have done a better job in ~150 minutes. He decided to make it a character piece and just kinda let the story roll along with their actions. Given all he had to do in the film while also making it a fun summer blockbuster, I can't fault him for making the choices he did.

What Whedon did that really impressed me was give fans of Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America--and to a lesser degree, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury a reason to feel like this was their movie.  I'm a Cap fan and I felt like Cap kicked the most ass.  My sis likes Iron Man.  She thought he was the star of the movie.  A lot of people I talked to felt like this was Hulk's movie.  People on this very thread said it seemed like Thor 2.  The fact that everybody feels like they got what they wanted is a feat in and of itself.

I know the meat of the story was the heroes coming together to overcome a threat.  It didn't matter what the threat was as long as it was huge.  It happens all of the time in these origin stories.  I can respect that.  I know that if I made the movie and it had touched on everything I would have touched on (Cap adapting to life in our time and being discouraged with what America had become, Iron Man drinking too much, etc) it would have been a much darker movie and it would have been six hours long. It would have been the wrong way to go.

The movie did what it was supposed to do.  It gave us The Avengers.  Not as tragic or tightly woven as something like X-Men but the closest representation of what we think of when we think of comic book super-heroes--larger than life characters, bright colors, unbelievable action, and cool set pieces.  As a superhero movie, it's second to none.  I just remember the heroes and their action more than anything the villains did or exactly what their motivation to do certain things was.

Wathmen beats bot TDK and this by far IMO. Its the only superhero movie that even consider to be a quality one. TDK simply didnt click with me, and while TA is a decent popcorn flick... well its a decent popcorn flick But then I was never a huge fan, so maybe Im a bit biased

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It was awesome. Watched it twice and I do not regret it. Whilst it was a superb superhero movie, it will not stick to me as well as The Dark Knight. That movie was something else, it's an actual superhero movie with an awesome storyline, and the Heath Ledger as the Joker was pure gold.

The Dark Knight Rises will have serious competition this year, however.

P.S And I have this hunch that tells me The Amazing Spider-Man is going to be a sleeper hit.

The level of enjoyment I had watching The Avengers movie was like combining my experiences with the individual prequels. The 'Ooohs' and 'Aaaahs', the 'Wows' and the 'Whoas', and all that laughter. Overall it beats any other superhero flicks I've seen.

But to compare it with Dark Knight? It's hard for me. I felt the Dark Knight isn't meant for "simple enjoyment". I definitely didn't LOL watching the movie, In fact I felt really terrible inside towards the end due to its tragic nature but It was an awesome experience nonetheless. It was a work of art.

it has the joker?

This is a Marvel mashup movie...not DC.

no joker!, it fails then :)

Agreed. I mean this film had A LOT to live up to like, the iron man, hulk and thor movies and for years this all led up to this one huge movie and they did not dissapoint. The first time the Hulk appeared my heart began to race with excitement he was so bad ass nothing could stop him.

Such an awesome movie.

I loved The Avengers. I saw it twice already, and it hold up pretty well on the second viewing. The action and dialogue were great.

The thing I liked the most about The Avengers is that each member played a vital role in battle, and each kicked ass in their own way. Examples are Captain America being the leader and giving orders to everyone, Hulk having some comedic moments, Thor showing off great strength alongside Hulk, Iron Man being hilarious as well as being part of the brains of the team and providing aerial support, Hawkeye being a total badass (possibly my favorite from the group), and Black Widow being hot as well as showing awesome fighting skills.

The most memorable part for me was when Iron Man flew down and fought alongside Captain America. I yelled "Fuck Yeah" when Iron Man shoot his lasers towards Cap's shield.
