Indeed it is, and I would obviously blame the developers for that. For instance, Super Mario 3D Land introduced lots of events where the 3D effects actually added to the gameplay. Games like Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 7 or Super Monkey Ball, on the other hand, ignored the possibilities completely. That is understandable to some extend given how not everyone can see the 3D images but that's a minority, and I don't see too many colorblind people complain about how several minigames in Mario Party requires color recognition. The entire games are not supposed to be based on 3D features, after all. Just a few sequences to justify its existence. And if they are optional then that's even better.

Good point. And even then, gameplay is only one part of the video gaming experience. Presentation is generally 1 of 4 or 5 aspects considered when a game is given a rating. So the 3D visuals if it were already only for Presentation are certainly not a gimmick. Granted for gameplay it's debatable, but already the point is won that 3D on a gaming system is not without value (even just presentation-wise).

Brilliant move..
And when we see "things" like "colors!" AND the fact that it can be turned off.-- AND the sales numbers..
It's hard to see any negativ.. :)

Sales can only say "People wanted to buy such a thing at such a price, and during such a period", or "People didn't want to buy such a thing at such a price, and during such a period". It doesn't give an idea as to what price would be better (unless you have that sales data to say so), it doesn't say who wants it, who doesn't. All that requires external analysis and guesswork (or insider knowledge), unless some kind of survey is done, but even those are not always reliable.

The only thing I could concede on the "gimmick" call is that 3D doesn't add much to the gameplay itself. But even that's debatable.

But when it comes to the video part of video gaming, the 3D display brings alot to the table, as far as visual improvements go.

For me, as far visual improvements go, I would have liked to see whatever resources went into the 3D implementation reallocated to a stronger system spec-wise instead (as in, without stereoscopic 3D). The ability to create more expansive worlds/more appealing polygonal graphics/better OS level features would appeal to me far more than the stereoscopic effect.

Right now I see it as a system with fewer options and more washed out colours when it comes to 2D games than its rivals (not just PSV, smartphones also) and much weaker polygonal capabilities than its gaming rival (PSV) and very soon most smartphones as well.

Then it really boils down to a matter of preference, Sal, because I actually prefer the RE:R (w 3D)/OoT 3D graphics to the Vita graphics. That's just me personally. However, LBP does look amazing on the Vita. I guess both interest me.

Of course it's personal opinion I understand a lot of people like 3d effects in their games, I was just presenting another possibilty in the visual department.

meh, it's like the dual screen, makes it different form the others, has potential but just a few ones will use it. bad decision?...nah, good one? hell no.

@Sal, okay, just wanted to clarify

Didn't you read Lord Cyansworth's list? Alot of the main games make heavy use of the touch screen...

As i said, just a few ones will use it, most of the time nintendo will be the one, , i should have added in my post "in meamingful ways" like lost magic, World ends with you or hotel dusk. 3d has potential to bring new experiences in level design, i agree, but i dont think people will bother and will just use it as candy eye.
