Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: Wii U/3DS will cater to core gamers first, mass market second

Ninty is lieing to people by acting like their new machine will be a hardcore gamer's dream.

When did they ever say this though amp? They're just saying they want to shift some focus from the casual to the core, they want to take back some of the red ocean market. If they believe they can do it, then why not?

In the mean time, rest assured, a reasonable amount of casual evergreen titles will be there at launch, all is well in the Nintendo camp.

What would you consider them shifting the focus from casual to core to mean?  It sounds like to me that they are saying, "Thanks for buying the Wii.  Now go back to playing on Facebook.  This system isn't for you."

That may be what it sounds like, and in that both you and Khan are right. But we know that isn't what's happening. His speech weighs in favor of core titles, but you should know by now they will cater to the casual market.

They did so with the 3DS, and we know the WiiU will be properly served at launch, it's almost certified fact. WiiU Me, Catch U, WiiU Sports. They'll all very likely be there for launch.

And Skyward Sword is on track to sell 15m copies. Yeah, everything is going according to plan.

Skyward sword has to do with what exactly? Evergreen, core? Not sure what you're trying to say...

This strategy is a 3DS/WiiU strategy, so mentioning Skyward Sword is really out of nowhere.

Your understanding of the video game market.

Your ability to argue without resorting to personal attacks.

Keep working on the comedy NP.  You are still young and have a chance of improving.

Thanks for alienating me, Amp.

I'm not alienating you.

Just giving constructive criticism.

That is what they all say.

To casual or not to casual, that's the dilema.
Tough position, but i see where it comes from. The core market is harder to regain than casuals, casuals will jump with the right software and ninty can provide that anytime, cores are more picky and hold more ressentiment. But it's the core market that will make them suffer while they try to regain their trust and thats soemthing the big N should be prepared for.
Anyway we will keep seeing the typical casual Ips(nsmb, wii_,ext) but this time they will try to get something to hold the core market (multiplast mostly). i dont expect them to go full cowaduty, but also like the 3ds i dont expect them to just realease music and minigames only. They dont really talk about forgetting the masess or reducing it at cost of the core, they will try to focus more at the core now to regain a balance and expand more than they did this gen, will they achive it? im not nostradamus, will depend entirely on their software.

I think it's more like: "Hey, casual gamers! How nice of to come aboard the Wii! Now, would you please stay here for a moment while I go and get back the core gamers who went to the other systems?"

As I said earlier, I don't think that they are being very honest.  It's like they say things like this because the casual gamer doesn't read gaming news.  I think that this is incorrect and people that picked up the Wii as their first system do in fact read and might be turned off by these statements..

Right, and we see what a good idea it was to make them wait with the 3DS.  Things worked out really well for Nintendo last year, didn't they?

pretty much, they depend entirely on other media to know what games are avalible. i doubt they even know they are cusuals. For them they just like games.

It's really possible, and that's a fair concern. But to take the words and ignore the actual strategy and argue from a false grounds isn't acceptable anymore (I'm looking at Rol), I'm holding you all to a higher standard guys.

Back to your concern. It's true that gamers can get news of this, but not from first-hand reading. It's usually bigger media outlets I believe that can transfer this information to them through less gamer, more mainstream channels.

Nevertheless, E3 is only a month away, and by then what we as gamers know will be touted on the rooftops. All the games the casuals ever wanted will be on the WiiU. It will be awesome.

You know they'll be there for launch, you know E3 is just around the corner, so why the pouty face?
