We all know people love pokemon. It's one of the best known and greatest selling franchises in existence. While the game rockets forth on handheld consoles, pokemon has had a mixed bag of titles on home consoles. Ones that are not considered "main series". I believe that this will change next generation with the Wii U, or at least there will be a strong title with plenty of support coming from Nintendo.

It has been known and recently shown in action thanks to the Ubisoft Rayman Legends leak that the Wii U tablet controller can use RFID in the same manner as Activision's Skylanders Adventures, where physical toy characters are used for gameplay. Now if you are paying attention you have probably already had the epiphany. Nintendo is planning a large scale home console pokemon game utilizing physical pokemon action figures.

This is just speculation but given that the controller is being made with this tech, Activision's great success with Skylanders, and the format of the pokemon games; it would be a missed opportunity for Nintendo not to stun the world coming out of the gate at E3 while its competitors are still out of the next gen market.

I am interested in what everyone's opinion on this topic is. Will Nintendo release an HD main series pokemon game for Wii U? Will you be buying physical pokemon to interact with the game? Will it take advantage of an online multiplayer? Pokemon masters, assemble!

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

It certainly seems like a slam-dunk idea, but Game Freak's reticence to move the series onto consoles could very well keep that under wraps, and then we'd get into spinoff territory, where things can get quite shady quite fast.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

i'm not sure nintendo picking at tactic that requires the consumer to buy even more cheap plastic peripherals would "stun the world" as you say. it's pretty much expected.

that said, although i outgrew action figures ages ago i'm sure it would sell well to the youngins.

Yes. By "stun the world" I mean sell crazy amounts. The Wii didn't hit with many gamers, but you have to admit they were floored that it sold so well. If Skylanders is any indication of a market for this, than pokemon will be able to multiply that success far beyond Spyro.

Apart from a greater opportunity to pollute the planet, this is an exciting prospect.

If it's based around you only having the Pokemon you own in figurine form like in Spyro, the game just wouldn't work at all; in fact it would be a complete disaster considering over 500 Pokemon exist. So I'm assuming if such a game were to exist, it wouldn't be a traditional Pokemon experience.

Two things:

1) This must be done on a small scale (i.e. extra legendaries or special cute mons) because we can't have a huge stack of these DLC pokemon. It's too much.

2) I want a way to purchase the DLC without buying the action figures. I have no space for them and I have no want for them.

Indeed it is an odd move considering the rise of DLC. There is just some charm to physical objects you don't get from pushing A on an online store.

What it could be, for example, would be to offer exlusive pokemon in physical form, and then you would register the pokemon's rfid code to your account or 3DS device. Any other attempt to absorb the pokemon digitally would then fail.

i'm not even sure it could sell crazy amounts.  you'll lose at least have the audience just due to the extra investment required to play.  unless you think 5-8M is crazy amounts.  i'm sure the profit margin on every action figure sold would be massively high though.
