Forums - Gaming - Live Action Game trailers are stupid

i think they only work if they are very very good. if they aren't hollywood quality people will see it and think "lol what a bad shit is that" because if you make a movie with real persons, it has to have movie quality or it looks ridiculous. or you go the funny way like youtube style videos this could work as well but not if you try to be serious.

didn't see one you are talking about let's see...

They can be a good way to get people to buy a game. The Resident Evil 2 commercial worked for me. Bu the old SMW2: Yoshi's Island one was just plain wrong.

Its not bad if the live action creatively moves into actual gameplay. However the prototype 2 commercial is the perfect example of what not to do. A live action only commercial is deceptive and does not display the game at all. Problem is too many consumers would just be "wow that looks cool... runs to buy".

is that not the point of a commercial?

Ture, however, it does so in a deceptive manner. That's my gripe as I'm sure others.

I think that Prototype 2 is going to have crappy graphics. They wanted to hide them.

I've seen it go both ways, though. That Metroid Prime commercial really hyped me for the game. Depends on the message they want to get across and how well the actors/production values convey that message.

I haven't made up my mind on the graphics yet. It seems like they may have put the graphics on the backburner to have more things going on in the environment. But then again I thought the graphics were pretty good in the first game, but I couldn't get into the gameplay. I put it down in less than an hour, which is pretty short for me.

I didn't play the first one at all.  I was hyped for it for a while but I went with inFamous instead.  My cousin beat it and said it sucked.  That was enough for me to avoid it.  I even saw it for $9 on Black Friday a couple of years ago and still didn't buy it.  My graphics impression was based on that Gamestop commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhQwt6IgVEI

that's what ign says about the garphics:

6.0 Graphics
The city looks good, but the drawn distance isn't great, animations look old, and the kills don't seem high-def.

I disagree. When games like Halo, Skyrim, Mass Effect, etc have live action trailers most fans for the most part know how the games play out and what they're expecting. Some of my favorite trailers are live action like the Halo3: ODST one. Now when it comes to motion control games, gameplay should always be shown.

I will say the Prototype 2 trailer isn't very good and I would be pissed also if I saw that 15 times.

I think they can be cool, but I agree with the wanting to see gameplay part.

My girlfriend thought it looked like a bad movie had no Idea it was for a game and the announcer's during the fights while listing sponsers kept saying Prototype 2 "the game" so I guess they wanted people to know it was a video game but didnt want to show any footage, to me doesnt make much sense to hype a game and not show any game footage this close to release.

I guess it sorta makes sense to have a live action reveal trailer like a year ahead of time so fans can get excited. I think Halo reach did that but games I am excited about teasers and live action trailers do nothing for me. Just confirm a game is in development.
