^I can understand people telling me it's not gonna happen, you're not getting an improvement in graphical quality, more depth in presentation and more detailed surfaces and environments, so get with the beat.

What I don't get are people seeing that Nintendo is not putting in their full effort in the presentation department, and us gobbling it up as if it was the cup of Khali.

You say you don't know of ANY video game series that changes its visual style from one game to the next, but what about Street Fighter, what about Diablo, what about TES, what about Warcraft, What about Metroid, what about Donkey Kong. You give me the example of Halo 2. Look at the screenshots for Halo 4!!! They are breathtaking! Why is it so much more to ask for when it comes to Mario 2D.

Well, friends, the answer is quite straightforward, and the truth lies in what Lord Ciansworth wrote, it could be the best explanation apart from time constraints (which I mentioned in OP). He said that possibly Nintendo is keeping certain surfaces and character generic so as to not alienate the mainstream that already purchased NSMB, and they need to make sure not to affect the winning formula. That's says money making to me.

My complaint isn't that NSMB2 isn't an improvement over the Wii version. I'm just suprised as to why it is so inferior. For this, I'll be willing to accept that it's a matter of resolution. But pezus mentioned that the screenshot was about the size of a 3DS screen, which makes sense. So there's either something we're missing (maybe the screen was taken at a poor resolution), or it's what it is. Assuming it's what it is, in terms of resolution only, I'm underwhelemed. Then, in terms of detail, yes I expect it to go beyond NSMBWii, because detail has little to do with HW capabilities at this point, the 3DS is more powerful than a GC for all suits and purposes. It would more have to do with time and talent, time for talent to spent on making the environments look more rich, more detailed. The time was simply not put, but the only question that remains is why, and I believe Lord C. did a good job at explaining it.

If that's how Nintendo wants to go a bout it, well I'm surprised you'd think I'm part of the minority, but I say Fuck You Nintendo, and here's why. The game is selling 20M+ copies a pop. It is their highest-selling Super Mario game. It is a 2D game, and requires a small team. Do the math, you'll find it odd that with those 2 considerations the game is not given more budget/resource allocation. So it brings us back to why.

We have 2 reasons:
1) Time constraints (possible)
2) Sticking to a formula (very likey)

If it's 1, it's excusable. If it's 2, I say I've had enough of this cash-cow strategy, I'm a big-game hunter, I've had enough.

Maybe I will still try the game, but I'll try it as a mediocre entry in a highly popular series and that's it. And I wouldn't care about it much more than that. Hype it all you want, it passes under my radar. If that's what Nintendo aims to do, then it worked (thank the Lord, I finally saw the light)

Brother you are better than that. If you don't like a game, it is a mediocre game? that makes not sense at all. I did not like Mario 64. I can say I almost hate the game. Can I say that Mario 64 is a mediocre entry in a highly popular series? never, in no way. I just don't  like Mario 64.

Took me this long oniyide, took me this long. Do you remember, Waay back when, the first ever time you confronted me for being a nostalgic Nintendo fan? It was just when I had joined, and I was only posting comments. We've gone full circle my friend. Now all that's left is that I make friends with M.U.G.E.N. and reconcile with LivingMetal lol :)

Its all good, we were all like that once, I was a huge anit Sony guy way back when PS first came out, Sega went under and i played Crash 2, Parappa, Bloody Roar and I never went back. I never got why people limit themselves in their game selections out of some sense of "loyalty".  I also never got why people think these companies are your friends.  I think we as adults should get away from that, if you love Ninty, thats great. I just bought 3DS myself with MK7 and got Xenoblade day 1. But some should get away from my company does no wrong ever. I love SOny, but i could list a bunch of stupid things they did this gen, hell the list is probably longer than the other two

i feel like this game isn't really made for the the 3ds since it is a 2d platformer, nevertheless i'm sure it will look fine. I find that nintendos games aren't the best looking games, but they always look clean for years.

The graphics are not what bothers me. What does bother me is the same art style over and over again. If you look back at the NES or SNES Mario games each one was unique and had a different art style. Today not much changes at all and we get the same look on DS/ Wii/ 3DS/ Wii U. Another thing that bothers me is that Nintendo is rushing out Mario games faster than Activision is with Call of Duty. As long as the quality remains high this won't really bother me, but I think that even Mario games can become boring to me if we get a new one more than once a year/ once a year...

That actuallt pretty much sums up alot of the opinions in this thread :P

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

3D Land, Galaxy, Luigi's Mansion, Mario 64, Sunshine, whatever new Mario game they come up with for the Wii U, etc.:  Push graphics.

New Super Mario and Paper Mario (to a degree):  Retro graphics

Mario Party, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and Mario Kart:  Standard graphics

Genius! Genius I tell you!!!

It's because when I like something I play, I latch onto the company. For example, I know I will always get quality from Blizzard. I know that Retro Studios will almost always deliver. I am not a fan of project Sora and don't like the new direction of the smash series, I need to unlatch. I need to unlatch from 2D Mario because it's not what I expect from the biggest series on earth. I need to latch off Nintendo in general except for certain main series like 3D Mario, 3D Zelda, portable Zelda, and such. Now I'm seeing the value in a studio like Naughty Dog, I will probably latch and follow them for The Last of Us once I play Uncharted.

@Rol. I have Mario Galaxy, and got most of the stars, I just when I play a game sometimes I play hardcore and stop hardcore. I guess I'm just harder to keep on a game than I used to. I am eager to get to Galaxy 2, but just haven't gotten to it yet.

IMPORTANT for readers, this next paragraph:

@my friends on vgcharts. I'll try to clarify what I mean. When you look at certain surfaces in the pics, you notice a sheer lack of detail. This has little to do with HW capabilities since the 3DS is a very capable system. What is lacking is twofold:

1) The time and resources injected to fully polish those surfaces, and add detail.

2) The desire to make the game less cheesy, less generic, while risking the "Viral Seller" status of the game, possibly making it stagnate even less.

I don't doubt the game mechanics will blow me away, I just wanted to point out lackings in what I consider an inportant component of a game: Presentation.

If there's anything I haven't addressed, please remind me with a link to the post.

@Conegamer. I'm aware of that, and am willing to wait. The thread was mostly about what I saw this far, and I needed to share it. Alot of people were praising what they saw in the pics, given what we have, already. I just wanted to share how I saw the early pics. I know it sounds like I'm over-reacting, but it isn't looking good to me... And by the time the game is out, nobody wants to talk about it because they'll have the game already,

I find now's the time to talk.

I haven't looked into it I don't like seeing a game I saw a bit of and look forward to playing. I hate spoilers. But if you really want, I can take a look at a few screens and see. I would do it reluctantly.
