Forums - Microsoft - Update: Xbox Live monetization won’t include microtransactions

Joystiq

Microsoft will implement another way to take your money through Xbox Live this holiday season, according to a description on group product planner Praveen Rutnam's LinkedIn profile. It reads: "Developed strategy to further monetize Xbox LIVE subscriber base that will be implemented for holiday 2012."

Without jumping to any rash, outlandish conclusions based on this vague statement, we can't help but consider what this change could be. One innocent possibility is a phasing-out of Microsoft Points, an event that was rumored in January and refuted in translation by Microsoft Switzerland. A more sinister possibility involves a console-based "online pass" and sacrificial spellwork.

Can't jump to conclusions either way, but it could be extra features, channels or whatever, or something less desireable for consumers..., we'll see.

The only thing i could think of is maybe some kind of server control like battlefield did, or maybe bandwidth cap.
Otherwise id say this is a troll resume.

Possibilities:
1. Free to play games with microtransactions
2. Universal Online Pass for all 360 games.(Unlikely IMO)
3. More TV/Video services.(Highly Likely)
4. Increased Xbox Live subscription fee.

Has to be one of these 4 things.

Why wouldn't they charge more? Not only will people pay for it but they'll come to Microsoft's defense in why they should pay for it.

This post made me giggle a bit.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I thought the thread title said Microsoft was going to further monotonize XBL at which point I was going to say online gaming is more fun than single player gaming. As to further monetizing it...XBL Plus?

Who said anything about charging more?  The way it is worded, seems like M$ is focusing on getting more people on XBL to get a Gold subscription (you don't need to pay to have access to XBL, just certain features like online multiplayer and apps).

Betcha by the beginning of next-gen Sony will be doing the exact same thing with PSN.  They's be foolish not to, especially since their new CEO has stated he wants to focus more on their gaming division to drive the company's success.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
