Who said anything about charging more? The way it is worded, seems like M$ is focusing on getting more people on XBL to get a Gold subscription (you don't need to pay to have access to XBL, just certain features like online multiplayer and apps).
Betcha by the beginning of next-gen Sony will be doing the exact same thing with PSN. They's be foolish not to, especially since their new CEO has stated he wants to focus more on their gaming division to drive the company's success.
