The article that video is adressing lost me at "aren't as many shaders". That isn't even a technically correct statement with regard to GPUs.

And then the video itself... comparing clock speeds across different generations of different brands from different companies is pretty pointless. We need to know a lot about the instruction sets of the processors before we can say Brand X Generation 1 2.0 Ghz > Brand Y Generation 2 1.9 Ghz. Silly video.

That said, I'm pretty sure the Wii-U is going to be more powerful than PS3/X360.

It is highly likely that the Wii U will not be a monster on paper, but if the system is well designed, efficient and has the right customizations it could easily be a very powerful system at its current size. Consider what could be done with laptops (which are obviously not as efficiently designed and games are not optimized for their hardware specifically):

We know the Wii U likely uses the 40/45nm lithography process (if you've been paying attention) and we know the Wii U case size is only 1/3rd larger than the Wii. Just do the math...

IBM straight up said it was pruducing the CPU at 45nm, so that is 100% confirmed

And 28nm yeilds are still low and wafers are very expensive so 40nm is the only real choice for the GPU that is virtually confirmed as well, there are no foundries capable of producing the 2 million odd GPUs they will need this year. Hell they can barely produce enough for top end GPUs at the moment.

There is no magic wand that Nintendo can wave arround to change physics ether, if they wanted a very powerful console they would have had to make the box bigger.

re: the bolded - I want to add to a bit of speculation on my part - I'd appreciate your oppinions on the following scanrio:

Due to feedback at E3 2011 and later, Nintendo may have eventually decided on making changes to the console's architecture in order to provide more robust support for multiple Wii U controllers. I don't think the system will be sold with more than one, but there's no doubt if their original intention was primarily to support a single tablet, that changing the spec of the communicatioin protocol and any hardware associated with it would result in a price increase, leading to corners having to be cut elsewhere, at a rather late stage of the design. Other factors such as the over-appreciation of the Yen may have also contributed to such a decision.

this is my only feasable explanation for this recent wave of information.

The bolded part is the only thing we know for sure. Where did Nintendo confirm the two other factors?

The Radeon 6990M uses the 40nm process (and all the Radeon 7XXXM GPUs are rumoured to use the 40nm process) and it is substantially more powerful than the XBox 360 GPU; and it still operates under similar size constraints to the Wii U.

I'm not going to argue about what the Wii U's hardware capabilities will be being that we will have a fairly good idea in a few weeks; but I think that the people who are foolish to believe that it couldn't be more powerful than the HD consoles are in for a surprise.

Yep I believe wishful thinking always trumps physics and financial constraints until the point where reality becomes undeniable.

They confirmed the size and from that we can infer the power consumption. Bigger = more heat disipation potential, smaller = less.

I didn't say it was less than the HD consoles. It really depends on where you set par as to whether you think the Wii U is sub-par. If you set par at say 3-4* more powerful than the Xbox 360 then you'd have to say the Wii U is likely to be sub par.

There is no good reason to come out with cherry-picked examples of chips which are far more expensive than the Wii U GPU and are considered some of the best chips in a large batch tuned for a mobile platform. There are no salvage parts and voltages/clock speeds must be set at an average which allows for the best yields with respect to cost, speed and cooling requirements. There will always be chips that perform better than spec, however spec must be set at a reasonable level in order to have a more cost-effective console.

Most games will not be that graphically intensive and will be rendered at 1080p@60fps, but more impressive looking games will probably be rendered at 720p (possibly at a steady 30fps).

This leaves Sony and Microsoft tons of room to win a figurative "Dick measuring contest", but not much room to make meaningful improvements. After all, they will have to produce something several times as powerful to get past a point where developers use the additional processing power for something beyond increased resolution and frame-rate; and this would be problematic because it would push the sale price of their systems far beyond what consumers would be willing to pay.

Unless you are comparing it to PC then "ALL" next gen consoles specs are sub par....

I said 'IF par was set at X and Wii U is less than X then the Wii U is sub par'. The word 'par' is ambiguous...

Do the math. How many transistors do you realistically expect that they put in the Wii U given a 45nm process and relatively normal die sizes? The Xbox 360 CGPU is 168mm^2. Even doubling that with better transistor scaling would likely only yield ~1.3B transistors @ 1.5* greater density on the same process.

A 45nm process would allow for 4 times the transistors on their CPU/GPU at a similar price to the XBox 360 CPU/GPU at launch being that the XBox 360 launched with a 90nm process; we also only have the CPU manufacturing process being confirmed, and (being that AMD has migrated towards the 28nm process for their high-end GPUs) it is possible that the GPU has moved to a 32nm or 28 nm process which would allow for a processor that had 8 to 12 times as many transistors relative to the XBox 360 GPU at launch ...

Beyond that, I'm talking real-world performance not theoritical performance. Simply updating the bus on the CPU and GPU and moving to 2GB of GDDR5 rather than the 512MB of GDDR3 that is currently in the XBox 360 would result in significant improvements in real world processing power of the system without substantial improvements to the processors; and this improvement can be amplified by introducing a 16MB to 64MB eDRAM on the GPU to store the screen buffer and act as a high-speed texture cache. Part of this improvement that would come from this is increased efficiency because the memory is faster, but the largest impact would be that artists could produce far more detailed environments because they were less bound by what could fit in memory; a large portion of the reason so many assets in PS3 and XBox 360 games are relatively low detail is not that the GPU can't render the image fast enough with them at a higher detail, it is because if they were higher detail they would take up too much memory when they're off-screen and result in data being reloaded from disc.
