I used to play on PC a long time ago, now it’s just consoles

I think I will become more of a PC gamer here in another month or so once I do my first custom build. I'm gonna start with Mass Effect because I really want to play it, but I want to play the entire trilogy on the same system. Then, I MIGHT get Skyrim, I am kind of on the fence on this one because it seems to me this game made the Medieval RPG game so mainstream. I mean jocks I graduated school with who never played a sci-fi/medieval based game in their life got this game. But I digress. I think it's because this generation of consoles almost were PC's.

PC is generally my preferred platform for muliplat games that are better with keyboard and mouse control. Once you get accustomed to the crisp visuals and full hd res...its really hard to go back to console (not to mention the other graphical upgrades that some PC versions have over the console versions).

But saying that, PC gaming is still a bit of a luxury that most cant afford or keep up with, I also pick and choose the games i get on PC. Buying Batman arkham city for PC was a huge mistake on my part i should have done more research into the PC version. Anyways platforms like steam etc. are making things like this a non issue, but i dont have the bandwidth capabilities to fully take advantage of this. But if i did, i would be an almost exclusive PC gamer at this point. Except for some of the PS3 exclusives which cant be missed imo (if you a ninty fan then the same would apply). But lets face it, must buy exclusives are few and far between, the only reason why it appears that theres so many great ps3 exclusives is because we are 5-6 years into this gen.

The moment when realised that i would never be impressed with current gen console graphics, is a moment i will never forget. It happend when i borrowed my friends BFBC2 ps3 game a second time ( about a year after the 1st time). In the space of that year period I had gotten a new gpu gtx560ti and a new screen (full hd screen!) and i had been gaming primarily on my PC for that year. So when i popped BFBC2 in my ps3 again after this time period, i was shocked i was once impressed with this games visuals. Yes i know BFBC2 is by no means a graphical powerhouse, but i dont feel game visuals on consoles have progressed significanlty since. My main issue was the decrease in res which becomes very aparent when you are accustomed to full hd res and smooth framerates consistantly above 30fps.

Other than visuals and graphics etc. i actually prefer consoles. The ability to lay on your bed from a distance from your screen and play is great...mp features as well. So yeah im hoping the next gen really brings the power! Even though i know bringing the power will be a financial mess particularly for sony and probably damage the company further, it is still something im really hyped for and hope they go all out :) Cant wait to be blown away!

You can use the xbox 360 controller from your bed to the PC. All PC games that are multiplat will function with the 360 controller.

Yes but that would mean you would need to buy the controller...its not standard with PC's (you can also use your PS3 controller but again thats only if you have it).

I have been playing a little more on PC again lately but the majority of my play time is still spend on consoles.
FPS is simply more enjoyable for me with mouse+kb, not only for aiming but for looking left and right quickly.
Adventure games are also better on pc. The ones I like are not available on consoles. Sims are also not available on consoles and rts/building games are way too fiddly with a controller. Civilization 5, Tropico 3, etc play and control 10x better on pc.
And then you have Steam sales and gog.com. The variety is endless and you don't need a very powerful pc to enjoy a library spanning several decades for only a few bucks per title.

But most of the time I prefer the convenience of consoles. No updates ready to install every time I turn it on. No drivers that need to be updated, no fiddling with graphic options to find the right balance between frame rate and level of detail. It just works, turn on and go. Plus on consoles I get 5.1 surround sound while my pc only supports 2.0 over hdmi and optical out.
And on consoles I don't have the internet and VgChartz taking away from my play time! Every time I set out to play some BG2 I end up browsing the damn internet and checking the forums instead :/
Consoles also have plenty exclusives I like. Dark souls, Zelda, Rayman Origins, SSX, Journey, Silent hill downpour, are just a few of the latest.

I make mistakes though now and then. I should have waited for the PC version of Skyrim to get back in stock instead of buying the ps3 version. Although I still enjoyed over 100 hours with it and got $35 trade in value back to buy Dark souls with. Something you can't do with the pc version.

I just bought an Alienware laptop last week and I've been playing a few PC games for the last couple of days. I'm not too comfortable with the mouse+keyboard yet so I've been using my PS3 controller for the majority of the games.

I got my pc just to play Mass Effect saga and since then I'm a happy rabbit. I just wanted to tell you that you'll have a wonderful experience by playing the three of them together, one right after the other. You are lucky...

On the other hand, I wanted to encourage you to get Dragon Age Origins too. Even if you played it on console before.

I didn't even know that doh! Doesn't matter, I don't see any advantage in playing this on PC then on a console. Unless you can decouple the jump button from the float button (damn jumping off walls when you float too closely) and assign a separate button for ground pound (no more plunging to death when trying to hit forward while floating downwards)

It would have been nice though if Silent Hill Downpour was on pc, performance issues really messed with the atmosphere in that game.
