First paragraph: There were plenty of CoD games on Wii and DS, releasing a unique title would just take some initiative and would make good use of the gyro and touch screen. Imagine disarming a bomb, having the screen zoom in and you had to entire the correct code on the number pad or cut a certain wire. Or operating a mounted gun and panning around to aim it, just like in real life. They could make a knock out game. History be damned too, even though the PSP wanted to provde home console quality games their controlls never let it happen. Handhelds are moving up.

Second paragraph: Come on Rol, you know better than that. Retailers and wholesallers take their cut out of the price tag, the cost per unit is much cheaper. Plus it would be digital, so no physical related costs. If it spurred "2 million" Vita purchases Sony would be more than happy to pay the ~20 per game that month, but the real benefit would be Sony's advertisement help. Compare this idea to what it would cost to have a price cut and it is petty cash.

1) I agree that making a good unique title would be easily possible for both the Wii and PSV, but the problem that Western publishers aren't interested remains. Maybe that changes with the PSV, but good luck with that.

2) Like I said, I used rough numbers for ease of calculation. But if Uncharted: Golden Abyss goes for $50, then you can be sure that CoD will as well, because that's what Activision thinks they can charge. And if digital versions of PSV games only have a 10 % price production compared to retail, then you are still left with $45. No way would Activision make a deal where they only got $20 per copy.

Wow, take a step back and think about that. The cost to distribute a digital game is almost null. Retailers and wholesalers probably get $10 each for a $50 game sale. That's $30 left for Activision, minus cost to produce the case which could be like $5 or something. That 10% online discount is mearly an incentive, they still make more profit off that then a retail sale. Say $20 or $30 from Sony per sale would equate to retail sale level profit, so that alone would be a huge incentive. This not including the advertisement boom. I mean really, have you ever considered the loss of sales when viewing those console bundles we see all the time. Sony's latest PS3 holiday bundle was $50 off with LBP2 and Ratchet & clank for free. If this idea is crazy but that isnt...i dont know what to say.

I know this is unrelated, but since Resistance: Buring Skies is an FPS like Call of Duty this game could be what future FPS could obtain off the Vita.

According to the site, Resistance Vita will pack "competitive 8-player online multiplayer across 6 unique maps and 3 modes." The minimum players will be two, and the modes are wifi-based.

What would be really amazing is if vita gets black ops 2 exclusive while every other platform gets the next big subtitle of COD.
The second best option for the vita would be to receive the exact same game the consoles get and have special vita centric features.
While a new title would be cool, it would essentially be competing with the console version.the most likely scenario is that it will be Black Ops 2 and will allow players to advance their online profiles on the go. It will be the same game which the consoles get and will have vita-centric trophies. There will be certain online lobbies which would support cross platform play. This will sell 6 million LTD and Sony would be smart to bundle the vita with cod this holiday.

We are talking about Activision here, the company that charges $15 for map packs and offers a paid Elite service for one of their games. If normally a digital VIta copy of CoD would go for $45 and $10 of that go to Sony (royalties plus hosting the game for download on their servers), then Activision would be left with $35. However, you propose that they would be satisfied with $20 or $30 in a scenario where the game is given away for free. But it's Activision who is in the driver's seat here, because Sony needs them more than they need Sony.

Bundling two old first party games isn't really comparable to giving a brandnew third party game away for free. The latter is more costly, because third parties want to be fully compensated.

What? I said $10 for retailers, $10 for wholesallers. That's $30 left for Activision. I don't know exact costs per copy but they sure aren't getting the full $50. They want to, that's why digital sales are where they want to go. Those two games weren't that old and that wasn't the point, they are willing to create incentives at pretty significant cost off price tag. So what if Activision provides a $50 game for free for one month, a good portion of those sales will be from consumers who buy a Vita, which allows Sony to compensate Activision for each free game given away because of a decent trade off. At the same time some people will probably sign up for Elite just to get that, that's extra revenue for content that is already provided, and those customers might continue with the service. It's just good business for everyone.

Best this is that this is above and beyond a smarter financial move than a price cut, which is a horrible decision and would destroy Sony's profits. By holding off until a reasonable time to drop the price gives them better leverage to drop the price at the right time. If they were to do it this year it would be forever before they could do it again leaving them in the same position later.

Doesn't Call of Duty use the R2, L2, R3, and L3 buttons? How do you translate those controls over tho the Vita?

If they get over that problem, I suspect they'll just make a version of CoD 9 for the Vita, and that it will sell a couple million units lifetime. Better than the Wii CoDs do, but still far worse than the HD twins.

Call me an optimist, but I think people are willing to pay for this game on the go, even without proper multiplayer anywhere.

The backside touch pad?

Yeah I dont think it'll sell as much as people would expect it to sell. Hopefully we'll get more info at E3.

I just do not see this game being that big even on the Vita. Maybe 500,000 copies if they are lucky is my prediction. Some games people just want to play on a big screen. But maybe I am wrong.

Grand Theft Auto did great on the PSP. Nowhere near the console versions, but still great. Half a million copies strikes me as low.

GTA can be fun on a small screen. Still the biggest game series at that time, could not push out more than 2-4 million in sales. Also GTA is big in the states. Was or is the PSP? Like I said, maybe I am wrong. We shall see when it comes out this Christmas.

I'm not sure what you mean in reference to 2-4 million sales , liberty city sold 7.31 mill and vice city stories 4.67 , with liberty city being the No1 selling psp game , still i expect it to sell great with regard to the early install base and I'm sure Sony sees it as a look here we have a cod with more to come rather than it being the one series to rule them all.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Rol, I think this Call of Duty will be an original game, joint-ventured by Sony (in other words, paid by Sony), like a second party game. It's too damn important for them.

Remember what I tell you about Monster Hunter? This is the same, the desperate company argument.

We should know about Monster Hunter next week, right? If it isn't announced, it's postponed until at least TGS which is in September.

I have my doubts now... the event is in Rome, I always thought it would be in Japan. Think I'm going to eat crow in this one, even though something big, maybe Vita or 3DS related, might be announced next week. But you're right, if no MH at Captivate, then none at e3 too. TGS at the earliest.

Hopefully more information on Monster Hunter Tri G localization or more information on 4. Either or is fine and most wanted.

If they were to do it this year it would be forever before they could do it again leaving them in the same position later.

Sony brought themselves into a situation where they have to destroy their profits in order to keep the PSV going. There may be several ways to get the Vita back on track, but all of them involve spending more money than Sony would want to.

This argument is turning into a battle of semantics in a highly hypothetical scenario, so I'll surrender and let you have this win. It's better to end it now than to keep dragging it out, because there's not much of a chance for a different outcome anyway.

It's nice you yield in the face of the numbers. I know its hypothetical, and companies usually don't arrange these kind of things. I just think with Activision having their Elite service provides such a great opportunity to create an incentive that would resonate and stack the cards in their favor while pushing Sony forward with their console and saving them from a price cut. The price cut is more than just a financially difficult decision, Nintendo caused themselves some problems down the road when they did that. Financially Nintendo was in a better place to do a cut than Sony, 3DS only costs $100 to produce as opposed to $160.

There are plenty of ways to encourage sales this year, sales aren't even that low yet. A price cut is only an option because Nintendo choose to do so. Sony would be smart to leverage other means so that the Vita can continue in its expected path over the years and provide Sony a profitable outlet. Unless they pull a move like I suggest with Activision, or provide inticing bundles during the holidays along with the release of new titles, Sony may consider doing a price cut through a modest bundle for the holidays only. Something like dropping $50 adding a 4gb and a game, but returning to their regular pricing after the season ends. This way they can sell more consoles to boost their base without suffering the fiscal hell that occurs from a premature permanent price cut.
