lol... I see plenty of people don't know what options you get in BF3 on the PS3... there isn't even an option to play a private match.. so yeah I find this pretty fucked up... first introduce private matches with customization option like in warhawk, starhawk, CoD, Homefront etc then go to dedicated server if you really want to..

Slow down people.

Buying a server means you can run your rules, kick people at your discretion, mod it to your hearts content, etc.

Its your server to do what you will with. For example, team fortress 2 has dedicated servers. Players can rent servers to customize as they want. You aren't buying the use of a dedicated server. You're buying to control one.

Interesting concept.

I can see this having both upsides and downside for individual players and the entire PS3 BF3 community alike.

As for the prices, they're not even that bad in my opinion, but that might just be because a lot of stuff is overpriced in general nowadays.
