Forums - Gaming - Assassin's Creed 3 uses new engine, allows over 2,000 characters on screen

Assassin's Creed 3 is being developed with a new engine known as AnvilNext.

According to Assassin's Creed IP development manager Tommy Francois, AnvilNext allows the dev team to include over 2,000 characters on-screen at any one time, implement a dynamic weather system and completely overhaul the animation system.

AnvilNext is an upgrade from the Anvil engine which was used to build Assassin's Creed 2, AC: Brotherhood and AC: Revelations, which itself was an upgrade from the Scimitar engine used on the firstAssassin's Creed.

We've just published an in-depth preview on Assassin's Creed 3, which looks at what the engine is capable of in a little more detail and explores many of the game's other elements.

Check out our in-depth AC3 preview.

While I am very excited, and the AC franchise has used impressive engine tech before, I do remember a similar claim being made in regards to AC1/AC2.

So I am careful to get my hopes up that this engine will allow for 2000+ characters on screen, each with their own AI. If they had claimed 2000+ characters on screen, but with a "swarm" mentality I might have been a bit more eager to believe this.

I'll be watching closely Mr Ubi.

After I lost almost all support for the franchise following Revalations, which for me was the worst Assassin's Creed game, all the stuff Ubisoft have shown for AC III is now rekindling my interest. The series has been overdue an overhaul, with a new setting and character. The gameplay changes sound promising and the new technology looks great.

So far, so good. Looks like I'm still committed to a day purchase. Please Ubi, don't screw this up.

Ya know... I'm kinda sorta becoming interesting in Assassin's Creed III. Batman: Arkham City is going to be a day 1 purchase with my Wii U later this year... but maybe Assassin's Creed III will be a purchase as well.

Looking good so far. ^_^

Here's hoping they make it more difficult and make the fights less boring.

Sweet. More beggars to get in my way =/

Despite taking place in a setting I don't care much for AC3 will be a fantastic game. People will compare it to Assassin's Creed II in how it improved the series. And they will compare it to Red Dead Redemption.

This is the last one in the franchise right? Hopefully they'll go out with a bang if it is.

unless it bombs mega hard, there will be MANY more Assassins Creed to come.

The best description is last one in the current saga. It will be last game featuring Desmond and will finish his story, but Ubisoft have made comments that imply the series will continue after AC III with a new underlying plot. However, after AC III they have said there will be no more yearly release and a next game won't be for a few years.

It sound interesting to me hopefully this game won't be as exciting as it could be.
