Forums - Sales - Twisted Metal is a MAJOR flop in Europe - we need to talk about it

hasnt it been a flop all around?

prior to release the talk on this site and from the guy who got beat up by a fat dude was that it would hit 2M WW end of this year. i dont think it will do that even in its lifetime, i believe the problem here was its timing the game was announced e3 2010 yet releases 2012, had the game been released early in the ps3 life cycle like the TMs of past gens i believe the sales and reviews would have been much better

Hey guys,

I thought we need to talk about this:

Twisted Metal sold 12,259 copies in Europe. It was only available for two days, but 12k is not much anyway. Let's be honest here, this is a MAJOR flop. Not even the typical "all PS3 exclusives are the best games ever made" antics of Sony fans will turn this game into a success.

This could have an impact on other Sony games coming to the PS3. In recent months Sony has already shut down BigBig Studios and restructured Sony Cambridge, currently rumors are going around that Zipper Interactive is next.

So can we still say that Sony games don't sell on Sony systems?

  • Resistance 3: 0.41m
  • inFAMOUS 2: 0.30m
  • MotorStorm: Apocalypse: 0.12m
  • Twisted Metal: 0.01m, but probably overtracked.
For comparison, the PS3 version Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 2.01m units in its first week in Europe.

Man did you really expect a twistet metal game to do well in Europe? How long are you on vg charts?

And can we please stop that Sony  exclusives dont sell on PS3 Systems shit talk. Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, God of War, Killzone, Heavy Rain all say hello. Did you also realize that the Uncharted Series is nearing gears of War levels in sales?

But not every exklusive can sell like a Uncharted und Gran Turismo. Let Microsoft have as much exclusives like Sony and you will see that only a minority will sell like Halo or Gears of War.

Not every game is a flop when it doesnt sell 3 or 5 million lifetime.

And did you really compare Twistet Metal with Call of Duty? This will be the same when i compare Alan Wake with call of Duty.

Hell, think before you write such bullshit. But i must agree Twistet Metal flopped in Europe and i also must agree that Sony should expand studios like Naughty Dog and close studios like Zipper.

If a good game achieves sales that can make enough money to warrant a sequel, I'm fine with that. Examples of these are Resistance, Killzone and Infamous. They may not sell many systems, but they are quality games and there is a big enough market for them to make at least make money. This isn't a huge problem for SONY because they do have other IPs that do very well and sell systems. E.g Uncharted or Gran Turismo.

Twisted Metal is a complete failure everywhere apart from NA. But why should we care if it makes money and gives the niche it appeals to what they want. It was never meant to sell systems, I'm sure SONY will be very happy if it only does 500k and 95% of those sales come from NA. They don't need it, it doesn't matter.

To give a direct reply to "So can we still say that Sony games don't sell on Sony systems?"

No. What we can say is some games don't, some games do. The games that do are Uncharted, GT and to a lesser extent GOW, LBP and MGS.

Any game that doesn't sell one million copies is a flop.

Good to know. I'll use that rule in the future.

SunofKratos's post made my day

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

TM was a well established brand during the PS1/PS2 era, the fact that it opened to such abysmal numbers despite having a reasonably large following from the previous generations goes to support Rol's theory am afraid.

12k FW is kind of bad for a big game like Twisted Metal, nor is it like the brand is saturated by now.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Killzone 3 (0.66m) and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (0.13m). SOCOM 4 is at 0.07m.

KZ3 was hardly a flop. What definition of flop are you using here?

Also, it was already established that you could have used Socom 4. So when I said 'two more to use' I meant besides Socom 4 since that was already known.

So, that leaves you with R&C. If you can't list me one more game, then I'm going to label this as a troll thread.

Any game that doesn't sell one million copies is a flop.

Other games that sold fewer copies than Resistance 3:

  • Warhawk
  • Genji: Days of the Blade
  • ModNation Racers
  • MAG: Massive Action Game
  • SOCOM Confrontation
I limited this to what you could consider core games. Collections, casual stuff and Move games were left out.

Firstly, are you going by the first month or week sales? Because MAG, SOCOM and Warhawk did 1 mil. Modnation is 70k away from it.

Secondly, what's your point? That some PS3 exclusives don't sell particularly well? Who cares? They do well enough to make a decent amount of money and many times warrant a sequel. They give the gamers that enjoy them what they want, and they make decent money. What's the problem?

SONY doesn't need every series they have to sell a shit-ton, because they can rely on their bigger IPs to really rake in the cash. Series like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, MGS, LBP and God of war.

Twisted Metal usually sells about 150k to 250k in Europe LT. Twisted Metal (PS3) won't be too far behind in the end.

Firstly, I am using LTD sales in Europe for all games I mentioned in this thread. The only exception is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for which I am only using its first week to compare it to Twisted Metal's LTD sales (which is only one week).

Secondly, go to Google and type in "gamrconnect MAJOR flop".

Oh.

Ok? All that came up that I recognised was UC3. Which is a pretty big success, not only sales-wise but critically.
