Forums - General - Health chief warns: age of safe medicine is ending (we're all domed)

we overuse antibacterial stuff for everyday items. it was bound to cause problems. Not every surface and hand need to be disinfected multiple times a day.

This isn't about disinfectant. That will always work if it's concentrated enough. We can't use that inside humans for obvious reasons - the hard part isn't to find something that kills microbes, it's to do it without harming the human.

Stopping use in farm animals is the best thing we could do at this point.

Looks like I'm gonna have to stay in my plastic bubble.

looks like you are right. It more about the misuse of antibiotics. Which i also feel are over used. Along with many other medications.

What did people do before antibiotics to cure strep throat? It is a common thing that happens all the time. Did they just die?

No, but on its own it would take a lot longer to go away, and there might be complications while your immune system is stressed. If you were weak in the first place before you got it, it could contribute to death maybe.

Bacteria can't be resistant to everything. There will always be working treatments, it's just they will take longer to work, have more side effects, be more expensive to obtain et cetera. This isn't an apocalyptic problem, more of an increasing inconvenience like climate change would be.

We're not domed.

What the hell is strep throat?

I think just mainly we really REALLY need to fix our farm industry.
We need to feed these animals actual food (not corn) like grass so that antibiotics don't seep into our bloodstream through them. So many of our health problems and just overall problems in USA today, come from our goddamn farm industry.

I couldn't really care much less. I'm almost never sick and when I am, it's not even nearly serious enough to require medicine. I've had antibiotics once, and even then it probably did nothing.
