A form of tonsillitus caused by streptococcus bacteria. I lived in America for a time and it was always called strep throat there and they took it very seriously, wouldn't let you in school and prescribed antibiotics if they were even mostly sure it was that. In the UK my experience has been doctors wave it away as sore throat and I had to go back in a much worse state after another week and convince them it was tonsillitus.
