All joking aside, I open this site frequently at work and there have been many times I have to scroll the screen to be sure some random user's avatar isn't showing just in case.

While this isn't an issue in some countries, in the US we can get in serious trouble for things like half naked people.. in bikinis etc. Kind silly, but yeah it can happen.

yeah and i can get in serious trouble if someone at my work will see that i'm on a forum about cartmans and so on so please stop having comic characters, cars, skyscrapers, clouds or bicyles as an avatar as long as i'm surfing for private things at work... or hmmm maybe i just could stop doing that at work because i don't get paid for that? yeah that would be a fair solution!

LOL its not my fault your work sucks. Also, there are things called breaks and lunches where anyone should be allowed to as they wish.

But having a female boss walk up behind me and see a half naked chic/man on screen would cause a lot of explaining and potentially offend her. Its just not that big of a deal. Personally, your's is fine, but many recently with few other users have been completely different.

hmm don't know what that has to do with my work because nobody pays you for that and if my work is good i don't have to surf on other sites because of bredom but i don't get why you have to explain you female boss if you are on such a site in your break why there is a girl in bikini on that site but not why there is a fat carman on that site. why is a bikini girls worse in america?

I think the image of the asian chic with an open top barely missing her nipples is a clear example of why this rule is now in effect.

Its a page or two back....

That will certainly get me in trouble if a female walks up and sees it on my computer screen. That is why if there is a thread marked NSFW, I don't open it up.

I do admit, while I like seeing people's avatars/sigs, Rol's solution with adding an option to hid avatars is pretty good. That combined with moderation for obvious over the top NSFW avatars would be sufficient.

I don't really see what peoples problem with this is. It's plenty easy to find websites dedicated to NSFW content, I don't see why this website (which is about games) needs to have NSFW or borderline NSFW stuff on every page.

So where does it stop , next we will have ex alcoholics wanting your avatar banned .

Two things.

1) Lenny is drinking out of a water bottle. Recovering alcoholics are not offended by water, in fact they often drink it.

2) Your slippery slope argument is without base as there is no indication that there is any need for the rules to become stricter than they now are.

isn't that crazy? i was replying to you as well because your pict looks like someone drinking like an alcoholic...your pic is offending some people as well then donÄt you feel bad and think you should change it?

but i still don't see the point why its nsfw to surch on a site people in the backround can see bikini girls but it's sfw when they see pics of comic characters (even some from southpark which isn't for kids as well)

I commented on your work as it seems sad that you can't peruse the internet at work if you are on breaks/lunch.

I make a very nice salary, but everyone needs breaks once in awhile... it has nothing to do with boredom.

I shouldn't have to explain why I'd have to answer questions to HR or my boss if someone reported seeing half-naked people on my computer screen. There are generalizations and grey areas, but there have been quite a few that are clearly potentials to get you in trouble.

Isn't there any application whatsoever that allows you to block images? Like for example, you don't like Machina's avatar, so you put it on the list of blocked images and from then on out his avatar won't show up in any threads you browse until he changes his avatar to something else.

If something like this exists and as long as VGC doesn't implement an option to not display avatars, wouldn't this be a sufficient solution for the less than 1 % or our users who have a problem with avatars right now? Sure, it would require some effort, but since you are browsing at work, you don't have anything else to do anyway.

Yes, and I use it at work. But first time stuff isn't blocked or what if they come back? or what if it blocks all avatars... I like seeing avatars as it helps related to who the poster is.... also, based on that thread with a poll.. I think its significantly more than 1% of the userbase that has a potential issue with this.

ok i get it, on your working place it's a problem if people could maybe think that you like to see pics of bikini girls or half naked men because there are few small pics of those people on the screen when they run behind you and even when this is something every person on this planet likes.

something i now from now on: working in a church (can't believe you work somewhere else) isn't something for me...

awwww

You're either really young (teens) or not from US... or both.

I work for a defense contractor as a software engineer/project manager. I get paid salary not hourly.

If I have half naked people on my screen and someone who walks by thinks I'm looking at some inappropriate site, I will be sent to HR and have to go through tons of hoops to proove myself innocent. Additionally i'd probably have to go to some crazy HR based training and have at least one manager convorsation about appropriate material.

That's just how it is in the real world... at least in US.

Personally I don't care and I stay out of NSFW threads and make sure things I think may be considered bad aren't on my screen.... and since 2006 when I started on this site, I've never had an issue.

However, its steadily gotten more risky over the years as more kids decide to go crazy with images. I don't see why you have to have such material as your pic... its not like its hard to find NSFW content on the interent if you really need to check it out. I've also frequented plenty of other sites for phones, random tech, android developing, etc and this site, recently, has had far more NSFW-ish avatars than anywhere else.

Since the bottle is not labelled it could be misconstrued at a glance as some one drinking heavily , as  to the other there was no indication that the rules on avatars needed changing until someone made a thread , I think Rol's suggestion that an avatar blocking tool be implemented is the best way forward , as it allows freedom of expression and also makes sure those people who don't want to see certain avatars don't have to.
