This thread is stupid. To many people, This includes SONY and MS fans, are addicted to a stupid pointless system. Lets leave it at that.

It's not stupid and pointless. How is a system that connects & records your progress across multiple games stupid?

Refer to the post above this one. Jay520 c'mon, 80% of a trophy list is just asking you to play the game.

you get trophies for learning mandatory moves or doing mandatory things. With 10% being repetitive task like beat 100 of this enemy and the last 10% offering a actual challenge.

Some people do get carried away with it (like Hakoom and the top trophy "hunters" in the world), but I feel it is a way for many gamers to get more out of their games. I know I wouldn't have played some games on harder difficulties if it wasn't for trophies, plus I have gotten a lot more enjoyment out of games with them.

Not every single game has lists like that. I don't believe Uncharted has any trophies for just playing through the game (other than beating the game on different difficulties), and Disgaea 3 doesn't have trophies that require anything with the main story (Disgaea 4 only has like 3-4 trophies associated with the main story).

True. Most developers use it stupidly but the trophy idea itself is still good in theory. Just bad in execution.

I think half the reason I bought a Vita was cause it meant I could double my trophey earning :P.

It's not something you can judge about a whole group of fans. There are people who take the trophey thing wayyyyyyy to far, I've however enjoyed having a reason to do the stuff in games I'd otherwise never have done. Like playng Uncharted on Crushing I'd never have bothered with, but I actually really enjoy doing it a second time over with the challenge the developers intended. The Mirrors Edge time trials are something else like that too.

I think the idea of them being 'achievement' is silly, but it'd nice to have a sort of chart of all the games you've ever played, how much you played them, what you did etc. I view my trophey list like i do my last.fm music chart, this awesome backlogue of all the music or games I've played and how much I dug them.

It's my opinion that the Trophy system is better than the achievement system by design. The achievement points can seem a little diluted, 5p here, 15p there. Just seems kind of inflated. The trophy system counts up individual trophy's by quality, bronze to silver to etc. So you can see your results clearly. Not to mention they add up to attribute to an overall gamer level, which Level 18 is more identifying that 358315p. Another great thing is the ability to compare trophys among friends, that's not just comparing totals but individual games against friends. They both do essentially the same thing, but with the trophy system you have better interaction and therefore can be more fun to participate in, which is probably why it seems such a big deal on forums, because trophy's can be analyzed nicely.

achievement system also has different kinds of quality. The higher the score, the higher the difficulty. At least it should be this way, though of course there also exist extremely easy silver trophies and hard bronze trophies etc. thus also being inflated.

Gamer Level is just as meaningless as total points. Higher usually only means that one plays more games and not necessarily harder games. Besides 10.000G is better than 5.000G and Level 10 is better than Level 5. Where's the difference ?

I especially don't get the last point, since that is exactly what you can do with achievements too.

Only real difference is the platinum trophy which has also positive and negative attributes.
Negative is (or "can be") that it only counts the original trophy set and you can still get it even though there might be DLC achievements left. Positive is that you can easily see how many games you have completed. On the other hand the Xbox console also shows you how many games you have fully completed (with DLC).
To me a platinum trophy or a 1000/1000G gives me the exact same proud feeling.

I actually  count the dlc exclusion from the plat trophy as a positive since I dont buy many dlcs and dont think the plat should be withheld until the dlcs are completed. In fact, i  would be pretty happy if the dlc trophies didnt automatically load onto your ps3 whenever you start a new game.

Personally speaking I prefer the trophy system and the reason is basically the platinum. The platinum is the trophy I always go for when getting trophies for a game - I dont really care about the Level or the amount of points I have but I generally like comparing platinums with friends cause thats the only way of telling how many games a person has fully completed.

Anyway, not sure why so many people in this thread dislike trophies/achievements - they are fun to try and get, they add longevity and a greater aspect to a game, some games already had achievement/trophy-like systems before these came with this gen,  as an addiction they are much more harmless than many others and I dont know why some people hate them so much.

I play a lot pf PS3 but i have never purposely gone out of my way to acquire trophies. I don't concern myself with them at all, the whole idea of a trophy system just never appealed to me. My friend on the other hand, he tries to platinum every game he gets. I guess I don't mind the system since it doesn't effect my experience and others seem t like it.

Level 10 btw :p

I would say the numbers of achievement hunters and trophy hunters are equal, but trophy hunters are very obsessive when it comes to platinum trophies, I would know, I'm one of them, although I'm not as bad as I used to be, I was extremely obsessed with trophies a little over a year ago.

I like the trophy/achievement system, lets get that out of the way first.  Second off, I think both sides are equally addicted.

Its all about how you get trophies.  I usually play a game through once to play the game, and if I felt the game was really good I'll go through again for a second/third/etc. time, but puropselly hunting down trophies.

EDIT:  ALSO, I don't get how people can hate on things (such as trophies/achievements) that only ADD to the game.  You don't HAVE to get them.  It's like someone getting a piece of cake, and then getting pissed off because a cherry came on top of it for free.  How about you just, you know, take the cherry off.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League
