There is a reputation system in place. It's called your memory.
Your suggestion is unnecessary, unnatural, and ignoring the fact that one automatically builds up a reputation.
I like the idea, but I think it could easily get abused by angry fanboys. You know anyone who posts a pro Xbox 360 comment would get nothing but thumb-downs from PS3 fanboys and visa-versa and on and on until it's as bad as youtube. People would probably register sock accounts to thumb themselves up and down vote their "enemies" extra.
With great power comes great responsibility. With fanboys, they have no sense of responsibility so they just abuse what little power they have.
It's a nice thought though.
If its anything like in saints row then im all for it.

Doubt that since there is no punishment (can't get voted down). Moderations aside.
Also quantity could outweight quality in that case. An average poster with 10k posts (exaggerated) will probably get more reputation than a high quality poster with 1000 posts. So voting down is actually important.
Maybe we could make a limit of ... 10 votes per day or something like that.
I'm sure that a rep system will create more animosity between factions. We don't need to ignite the fanboy wars, they have youtube for that.

Interesting idea, but I'd have to agree with kain on this one. It's easy enough to tell someone's rep here.
(although my memory is complete shit, and nearly forget everything about posters everytime they change their avatar)
