Forums - Gaming - Are we living the best time of all time in gaming?

Today, I looked at my gaming shelf and saw my Snes.It reminded me of my first Amiga and then Snes...Me as a kid playing Megaman etc( I remember having 20 pages of passwords). Was that the best time of my life (in gaming)? Not really,it was just fun.Soon Metal gear solids,Dino Crisis,Resident evil and others, more mature games which had interesting story etc were released, tho I just bought them because I could shoot stuff..I looked games that had Finnish subtitles, so I would understand something.Only remember few games having such option (kings slay, bugs life).

Today, if I were 7 year old kid, I could pretty much choose 1 random console, 1 random game and most likely it would be good and had Finnish subtitles or dub ( at least on PS3).Of course I wouldn't understand much about anything, but since gaming has become much more social and popular in the world, I would think my parents would teach me basics.Tho I'm not sure was connecting snes to my TV easier than connecting Ps3 to TV...Updates wtf.And if you don't have to connect your console to internet, you don't have to worry about updates.Well then we have games like Fallout new vegas which is just broken, useless piece of crap game without patchs.

For every console, there is great games.Actually at the time I own only Ps3 and Pc and I still have 10+ great games, waiting to be played.I wouldn't mind owning all consoles, because even for 3DS there is few games I'm interested. If you are "newbie", you can buy phone and play some random casual games that you like. If you have computer, you pretty much have thousands of games available, for free.

So gaming is easy, pretty simple. We have great consoles and great games and so we have lots of options, be hardcore or casual or whatever gamer you want. Gamer can be proud to be a gamer, not shamed.Gaming studios are growing, and so comes more jobs to us who are interested of gaming business. This is the best time to be a gamer. That is all, carry on.

I would personally say that the second half of the 1990s was the pinnacle of the gaming industry so far in quality of games.

Gaming is however more accessible now and is cheaper as a hobby (It is here in the U.K and I assume it is similar elsewhere) than at any time previously. Games have stayed the same nominal price, or even fallen, despite rising prosperity and about 2% inflation. Services like the Virtual Console and PSN have allowed new gamers to experience the classics at a really affordable price (£8.40 for a game like Ogre Battle 64 is a steal).

Obviously, it all comes down to the experience you´re having with the games.

To me, the best time I had with videogames was in the 4th and 5th generations, mainly with the SNES and PS1 (and the N64, but to a much lesser extent).

This gen, I ended up getting all 3 home consoles, but what I mean is, my first time playing all the SNES/PS1/N64 gems was a far better experience than my first time playing all the 360/Wii/PS3 gems.

Next gen I´m no longer getting all 3 again, I´ll stick with two home consoles and that´ll be enough.

In a nutshell, the 90s was indeed gaming heaven as far as I´m concerned.

This depends so much on tastes that there can't be a definitive answer.

I'd say no, simply because I don't like the fact that everything is going towards digital distribution, convergent devices, focus on online, etc. But of course some people will call me a grandpa because of this. And then some people dislike most games post SNES because of the focus on storytelling, cutscenes, etc. So it really depends on what you like.

To me its mostly about early 90's and early 2000. Today is an ocean of mediocre or poor games with every odd title being worth a little something. In my humble opinion. As far as consoles go, no generation has bored me as much as this one and I've been at it since 1988.

Yes, because you can still play all your old games.

It is not the best time to be a gamer since there are only two types of games now. The ones aimed at males between 13-25 and the ones aimed at everyone else.

Well my favorite games were released in Snes/Ps1 era but this gaming era is still much better than it was back then.
Gotta look the big picture.

Seeing it this way kind of makes sense, if you consider the fact that the main difference now is a larger and still growing game library. GOG and Steam have saved gaming for me in the past couple of years, that much is certain!
